1977 Royal Oporto

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

Tasted at JDAW's Cellar Reduction Dinner on 16th February 2022.

Soft red in colour, mature appearance; 40% opaque. The nose is very limited; a little fragrant cranberry and star fruit. Not a big nose, but certainly attractive. Nice texture with red fruit and tannins which are almost fully integrated. The late palate shows dried vine fruit and dried citrus zest. A lovely mouthful. Elegant fruit dominated finish. A surprisingly lovely wine. 90/100. Drunk 16-Feb-22. Decanted 3½ hours.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

35% opacity, mature red. Smooth entry, medium weight, redcurrants. Slightly unbalanced, alcohol not best integrated.
