I am generally avoiding vintages between 1997 and 2002 as I feel that these are closed and will drink better in a few years time.

But this is a huge generalisation.

Agree on Alex. Some 97s are starting to come out again, but you only see which after you opened some...

In general can you say that a Port can be closed between the ages of 10 and 15 yrs of age .
Since some SQVP's achieve a certain maturity at 10 yrs , does that mean they are closed earlier ?

Not necessarily. So stay tuned and read the TN-section.

P.S.: I know that it is frustrating. You can take this as the golden rule. But for the85s for example: the Croft is very far developed and the Taylors is at least partially closed. So a rule of thumb does not really work.

So , Axel , can we deduce that House style plays a part ( since you mention Croft and Taylor ?

I would say so, but that would be - again - too much generally speaking. If you see the Croft 2003 this is something to last and is able to match the big names. So if the house style changes, the behavior of their ports does, too.

Anyways: rules of thumb are too easy and if everything would work out like predicted, it would be boring like sh.

Another example of the fact that there are no hard and fast rules - I haven't yet experienced what I would consider to be a 1994 VP that has been in a closed phase.
