1980 Blandy's Sercial

Post by winesecretary »

Dark orange, green rim.

Extraordinary nose, not in the least bit reminiscent of sercial.

Palate indescribable in wine terms. Fennel salami?

Very long, dry, acidic, finish. Lots of VA (1.3g/l).

I am not sure what to make of this, to be honest. On the one hand it is a genuinely thrilling drink. On the other hand it is not typique. Blind I would have said this was a Sercial-based blend with some Bast ardo (split spelling to fool the censors), TNM and a tiny bit of Complexa all co-fermented.

2019 bottling.

One of the samples discussed as part of the Madeira Masterclass of the Big Fortified Tasting, presented by Rubina Viera from the IVBAM on Thursday 29th April 2021.
