12 August 2020 - A Port Meal with Port Chums

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

To celebrate the mid-COVID reopening of the Boot & Flogger, 6 of us got together in a room that could hold 10 to share (blind) some Port and steaks.

Organising thread.

The wines drunk were:
  • Offley Boa Vista 1963 from magnum (UK bottled) - variously guessed as Warre 1958, Taylor 1963, Dow 1960, Warre 1966 and Taylor Vargellas 1967.
  • Quinta do Noval 1963 (Oporto bottled) - guessed as Cockburn 1960, Sandeman 1955, Croft ??, Croft 1963 and Martinez 1963
  • Smith Woodhouse 1977 - guessed as Taylor 1994, Sandeman 1977, Taylor 1980, Taylor 2000, Taylor 1992
  • Dolamore 1966 (Dolamore bottled) - guessed as Fonseca 1977, Warre 1966, Taylor 1985, Cockburn 1970, Fonseca 1970
  • Warre 1970 (BBR bottled with a pink foil cap) - guessed as Fonseca 1970, Taylor 1977, Warre 1970, Taylor 1970, Cockburn 1970
  • Niepoort Crusted bottled 2014 - guessed as Vesuvio 1997, Noval 2011, Niepoort 2009, Graham 2011, Taylor 2009
The Monkey guessed the wines to be Dalva 1963.

The Monkey, with 2 points, was only beaten by Mike, with 4.

Wine of the Night scoring was:
  • Offley 1963 - 0 1 3 2 1 1 = 8
  • Quinta do Noval 1963 - 1½ 2 2 0 0 0 = 5½
  • Smith Woodhouse 1977 - 0 2 0 0 0 0 = 2
  • Dolamore 1966 - 3 0 1½ 2 3 3 = 11½
  • Warre 1970 - 1½ 1 ½ 2 2 2 = 9
  • Niepoort Crusted bottled 2014 - 0 0 0 0 0 0 = 0
so WOtN was the Dolamore 1966.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

The Niepoort Crusted looks like it came across well if so many people guessed it to be a VP from a top-level shipper (including in some premier years).
