It's looking like I won't now be able to make this Alex. Should become free around 9pm if the session is planned to continue once the "official" part is over. If you're still managing numbers, Wolfgang was on a waiting list and could be added?

Just seen list: I don’t have a +1, so another space is free.

And will be drinking the 2005 LBV.

Wolfgang - looks like you're in.

Mike - I'll send you the invite anyway.

All - I'm confirming the start time, but 19.30 has been suggested. Please don't be early as we'll need a few minutes to get ourselves set up.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

Decanted mine (Port Club ruby) at lunch. Really quite punchy with a hit of liquorice. Looking forward to learning a bit more about it tonight!

I will either need to connect a couple of minutes early (5 or less), or some indeterminate number of minutes late. The 19.30 start time coincides with the start of one of my meetings that often distracts me during these gatherings.

I will plan to connect a couple of minutes early and simply remain muted until you're ready, unless you'd prefer that I wait to connect until my meeting is over.

Wait, you're gonna do a Port tasting and a (work?) meeting at the same time?

The work meeting is via a chat program - text only. So I'm able to be on Zoom with the Port tasting and still be part of the work meeting at the same time. I multi-task! :-)

@ flash_uk - thank you for the suggestion, I did, and it was lovely to spend an hour with you all, and the enormously engaging Johnny Graham.

Alex - you likely may already have done, but could you pass on my/our thanks to Johnny, Jamie and Ben for hosting us last night. They were supremely generous with their time and I really enjoyed getting a lot of in-depth insight into the Churchill story, the philosophy for their winemaking, and lots of interesting stories about the Douro more generally. Very kind of them and hugely interesting and informative.

Pick the chances. I had a leftover bottle from one of the last Portweinmessen and totally forgot what it was (no label, no capsule inscription) and just opened it:

and the corc gave it away:

It is the Vieira de Sousa Agua Alta Vintage Port 2016. Great Port. One to look out for. Especially after what we have learned yesterday. Thank you for organising this, Alex

Alex I echo Simon’s comments. I joined a little late and when I saw the line up I reckoned Ben And Jamie would end up wheeling Johnny out in a wheel barrow. Learnt a lot.

I do feel that Johnny has set the all-time standard for the presenter being almost invisible behind the mirror of the forest of bottles being tasted by the audience. Not even Julian could have polished all of those off. It was absolutely splendid to see; albeit, since Johnny did not consume all of the contents, not eighteenth-century. As Captain Gronow puts it:

"Drinking and play were more universally indulged in then than at the present time, and many men still living must remember the couple of bottles of port at least which accompanied his dinner in those days.... whilst the dinner-party, commencing at seven or eight, frequently did not break up before one in the morning. There were then four, and even five bottle men... the late Lords Panmure, Dufferin, and Blayney, wonderful to relate, were six-bottle men at this time"

+1 Couldn’t say it any better than Mike has. Many thanks to all involved.
