2015 Calem

Post by JacobH »

2015 Cálem

Dark purple, fading to a lighter purple. Quite floral on the nose. Violets, perhaps? Strongly grapey, still. Very sweet on first tasting. Only limited fruit in the mouth: blackberries and blackcurrants. Limited acidity. Surprisingly few tannins. Drinkable now: very enjoyable but query longevity.

Cálem is one of those shippers I see everywhere but which I rarely try. I thought I would therefore have a go at a few of them to see what they are like (see other reviews for the “White and Dry” white and 10 Year Old Tawny). I was actually quite impressed with the range.

Rated*: P+

* A Note on Ratings

My rating system attempts to answer the question “is this a good Port?” one of three ways: N—No; P—Possibly; or C—Certainly. Ports generally are weighted slightly by their category. Therefore, a Ruby Port might receive a C rating for Certainly good which it might not were it to be a Vintage Port. I sometimes modify my rating with a plus or minus indicating that the Port is better or worse than might be expected for this category.
