Re: 1985 Rainha Santa
The TN has been duly corrected - with immense thanks to you Phil. And my gratitude for the link, which I had missed (i.e., shoddy research on my part). As to travel to Florida... well, maybe to northern Florida in winter, with those wine suitcases which piles of us purchased around Christmastime.

1985 Rainha Santa
Rainha Santa vintage port was produced by Offley-Forrester in 1982, 1983, 1985, 1987, 1994, 1995 and 1997. I have no idea how many bottles were shifted in any of the aforementioned years nor the source of the grapes. However, I can state with complete certainty that this is a hard-to-find wine; that...

1970 Dow
What a magnificent port this proved to be! In the glass on 20 February 2021 after a three and one-half hour decant, this brick-red wine with a clear rim was remarkably opaque for a vintage port which has passed its fiftieth year. More remarkable still was the nose. The first thing that struck my dri...

1994 Burmester
A week and a day after being confronted by the stunning 1970 Dow’s vintage port, this seeming child presented itself and, to my utter delight, exceeded by far all expectations. In the glass on 28 February 2021 after a six-hour decant, the wine was half opaque and exhibited pinkish-brown hues, crowne...

Re: Cellar Defenders without Selos or Labels
Long time lurker, first time poster! This post made me come out of the woodwork. As part of my long-running commitment to enriching the family which owns the property adjacent to Quinta Dona Matilde, I recently had a dozen bottles filled with what is claimed to be a 1937 colheita. This tasting note...

As part of my long-running commitment to enriching the family which owns the property adjacent to Quinta Dona Matilde, I recently had a dozen bottles filled with what is claimed to be a 1937 colheita. This tasting note is based upon an initial sample. Was it a 1937? I have no idea. If it was a 1937,...

1982 Kopke
Decanted properly, which this bottle was not, the 1982 Kopke can be a delight - and indeed, as good as any vintage port produced from the ’82 harvest. On 14 February 2021, the wine presented well in the glass: brown and maroon tones dominated this largely opaque offering. However, after six hours in...

1995 Taylor Terra Feita
This was the first Terra Feita which I had consumed; it was purchased some six years ago whilst waiting to depart from Porto airport after a week in that city. Indeed, it was during this sojourn, then only my second to Portugal, at which I learned what port wine is supposed to taste like (i.e., not ...

Re: 1995 Torga
Literary types will know Miguel Torga as a twentieth-century titan of Portuguese literature. Of arguably more relevance to a semi-literate, would-be port afficionado such is myself is the fact that Torga is, as far as I can determine, the only non-producer to have had a vintage port named after him...

1994 Burmester
I have expressed my view elsewhere on this forum that, in good years, Burmester vintage ports rest oftentimes at or near the top of the second rank. Perhaps unwittingly, Mr. Hersh placed the 1994 precisely there in a 2014 tasting note. In the event, this bottle proved to be a disappointment. In the ...

1994 Quinta da Romaneira
Lauded justifiably for its tawnies and, to a lesser degree, for its still wines, ‘tis nonetheless with good reason that the cognoscenti have not sought the generally pedestrian vintage ports proffered by the physically-immense Quinta da Romaneira. In the event, the 1994 Romaneira rests comfortably a...

Re: Cellar Defenders without Selos or Labels
Earlier in this thread I reviewed a 1978 colheita from a farm which lies adjacent to Quinta Dona Matilde, a Barros family (as opposed to Sogevinus) property. I have since acquired several litres of a 1989 colheita, from the same farm, as well as a 1960 tawny. My impressions of the latter follow here...

1977 Quarles Harris
The Quarles Harris label came to form part of the Symington stable before there was a Symington stable of which to speak. As the making of Quarles Harris wines has never been tied to one or more quintas, there is arguably greater scope for creativity in the making of this port when a vintage is prod...

2016 Quinta das Tecedeiras
Consumed on 27 December 2020 after a nine-hour decant, the infancy of this port was reflected initially in its entirely opaque, dark magenta colour which painted the sides of the glass magnificently with every turn of the stemware. At the nose, blackberries and mulberries confronted the olfactory ne...

1948 Taylor
This bottle was one of a lot of several like offerings auctioned earlier this year by Sotheby’s; like the rest, it was identified only as a 1948 Justerini & Brooks, with the producer unknown. However, an obscure clue found in Mr. Wiseman’s life’s work suggested that the wine might well prove to ...

1987 Niepoort
Fond as I am of Niepoort colheitas, I maintain a respectable supply of older variants in the cellar. Alas, I have not yet warmed to the vintage ports of this producer: not because I dislike them; rather, I find Niepoort vintages to be an acquired taste which I have not yet acquired. I would have sai...
