Two evenings in London (17 & 18 March 2009)

Henceforth, I believe that the first page for all reviews should be phrased in the manner of Mr and Mrs A.L. Simon's Menu File The place The Crusting Pipe, WC1 The dates 17 & 18 March 2009 The guests AHB , UncleTom , Benread , JacobH , Christopher . The fare The usual. The wines 1947 Rebello Val...

It’s ugly. 1. /RenderPagesSeparately false def , which will massively increase file size and distillation time. 2. /FooterLeftText [{WaterCountPositions SheetNum get /LowerRight eq { something } { something } ifelse}] def , and likewise for /FooterRightText with the something s reversed, and equall...

Re: London, week beginning 16 March

Safely arrived in London, leaky bottle stood upright in the secret port compartment of my otherwise very professional looking business case. I wan't quite sure if we were still on tonight (or how or when) but I grabbed a couple of halves, a funnel and some coffee filters on the way out of the house...

Placemats updated ; hopefully to reflect the state of play. Julian, do reminder me sometime why the placemat software cares about my handedness? That already feels like taking itsy-bitsy-ness to the extreme.Ghandhi Watercount boxes on right or left? Given that they are going to be somewhere, where s...

You seem to be having some back luck at the moment with under-performing Fonseca ’63!I hope the next one you open is more successful!

Re: London, week beginning 16 March

If it is preferred, Tuesday we could meet at "Cooperage", another Davy's wine bar right by London Bridge station (48-50 Tooley Street) and therefore hopefully convenient for any heading home either South or North. I could be there about 8:30pm. The place closes at 11pm. That would be fine...

Re: London, week beginning 16 March

It seems that my employer has realised that with the global team coming together in London, a team meal should be organised - for Tuesday. I may be a little late in reaching TCP. We're eating at the Chop House in Butler's Wharf. I would estimate that we'll be finished about 8:30 and so I should rea...

What about Monday or Tuesday? Not sure I could do the theme of ‟leaky bottles of port” but could probably find something else :)

Re: Spring forward, fall back

My grumble is the miscalculation. Pope Gregory reset the clock back to the Council of Nicea, rather than to the original Julian proclamation. Hence the modern calendar is wrong by three days. Today should be Tuesday 13 th March 2009, rather than Tuesday 10 th March 2009. My campaign to have this fi...

I tend to agree, though it’s somewhat undermined with the phrase ‟have been found by experience to be attended with divers inconveniences” (in the preamble) which I find rather attractive!

Ben, many apologies for the delay, but I think I got permission to come along last night (it was less than a ringing endorsement), so please could you ink me in on the invitation list. I'll next need to sponsor a bottle, so I hope someone will be in contact...? Ghandih: may I have you initials for ...

Re: Port for sale by retailer

That's odd, if I look at their website, Cockburn 1960 goes for £55 instead of the £48 you mention. On the Dow 1960 it says £59,57. Were these offers in a seperate e-mail, or am I just missing something on their site? I think the offers were a ‟February Sale” (which also ran into March) and is now,...

Re: Spring forward, fall back

I find the first British act on this topic (c.14 (6 & 7 Geo. 5.), ‟An Act to provide for the Time in Great Britain and Ireland being in advance of Greenwich and Dublin mean time respectively in the summer months”), one of the most disturbing pieces of legislation in existence: not only does the...

Re: Drying decanters

I suppose another way to avoid mustiness (particularly if a decanter is going to be stored for a while) would be to put some bicarbonate of soda in it, after washing, which is quite good at absorbing residual moisture and odour. Of course, the decanter would have to be rinsed before use, unless you ...

Re: Port for sale by retailer

Nickolls & Perks has some reasonable offers on Port at the moment (though annoyingly in a format which precludes transplanting here). A representative sample includes: Churchill 2000 LBV (unfiltered) £8.07 Skeffington 2003 £90.00 (half case) Croft Roeda 1997 £13.58 The more expensive Ports are ...

Re: 1992 Churchill Unfiltered LBV

That is a very good price for the LBV of a producer who has a good reputation for their unfiltered wines. Nice find! They’ve got a few Ports on offer at the moment at pretty reasonable prices. I’ll see if I can make a post in the relevant place! After a few goes, I failed to easily convert their co...

Re: London Quinta De Vargellas tasting - 24th March

I will happily leave you two kerning away. My only comments would be that I can live with the font of the numeral 1 as it is, but would also observe that it is rather harsh looking against the other numerals, with 1991 looking particularly dominated by the numeral 1 - the 1 almost looks to be talle...

Re: Maximilian K. A. Wiseman's Headwetting Virtual Offline

I failed miserably to participate last night. But a belated toast and congratulations! Take heart that you have 16, 18 or 21 years* to talk the IVDP into letting you ship a pipe of Vesuvio 2009 (as they declared in ’89 and ’99 so it should be a safe bet, even if it counts as a SQVP!). * depending on...

1992 Churchill LBV (unfiltered)

A recent acquisition in half bottles from Nickolls and Perks which, somewhat unusually for an LBV, was bottled in 1998 after 6 years in wood. I decanted off only a small amount of thickish sediment. 1+ The colour suggests maturity; a lightish red slightly fading towards the edge of the glass. On the...

A Saturday should work for me, too. Can also give a hand finding alternative venues, if desired.

Is there any significance in the Guests being downgraded from ‘Honoured’ to ‘Invited’? :)

Would it be possible to include the name of the person bringing the bottle in the circle marking the space for the relevant glass as well as the name of the port?
