Re: Beer, 32% ABV
Hmmm...41% = 80 degrees proof. Be more interested to hear from someone who's tasted it! It had a tasting on 'The Wright Stuff" and the general consensus was that it was disgusting I've seen a documentary about these beers. It's actually a bit "easy" how they get to the extreme alcoho...

Re: Wanted: Four dozen inexpensive port glasses..
They come in boxes of six, which are easy to stack - I stuck three boxes into a rucksack with a bottle of Port and didn't lose one.

Re: It's time for Fonseca 1963
If I ever refuse an untainted Fonseca 1963, 66 or 70 you will know that it is an imposter posing as me - shoot to kill. Apart from a bad bottle of 66 these have been the most consistently high quality Ports I've ever had and I don't think I've ever said anything unpleasant about them. Please involv...

Re: Wanted: Four dozen inexpensive port glasses..
I want to buy about four dozen (at least 40) port glasses that are broadly similar in design to the standard tasting glasses, are of crystal rather than heavy soda glass, and are not too expensive! They don't have to be new, but I would prefer they were all of the same design, do not carry any comm...

Rutherglen Stickies Better than Port?
Despite the ridicule that we give out to other countries efforts to use the Port name in vain, we should always look to see what they are up to. Rutherglen is a small area of Victoria that makes the very best Australian fortified wines. The main styles are called Muscat, Tokay and Tawny - don't assu...

Re: Cleanskins
This sort of thing might even make more sense in Europe where there is lots of AOC / DOC wine which has to be sold declassified for various reasons (particularly quotas) but I don't think it's ever done. Virgin Wines do this sometimes. I have bought 2 cases of red from them on this basis and both h...

Sparkling Shiraz
Sparkling Shiraz - $8. Aussies are under the impression that fizzing up heavy red wine is uniquely Australian and quirky and therefore a great thing. In general, this is unadulterated bolleaux. The reason other countries have stopped doing it is because it's just so wrong. All prior to this visit ha...

Chardonnay 2009 AT7
Chardonnay 2009 AT7 - $2.20 OK, had to buy this. A bottle of Aussie wine for about £1.35. If it was rank then so what? Chilled it and opened in anticipation of some bilious concoction. It was actually quite pleasant - lemony chard which was very refreshing. It's not great but this is wildly better t...

New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc Reserve 2009 RP95
New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc Reserve 2009 RP95 - $9.
Not quite as good as its elder brother (don't think RP95 stands for a Parker rating) but still a very good NZ SB. I bit more citric with the grapefruit tones but genuinely good stuff.

New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc Reserve 2008 RP94
New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc Reserve 2008 RP94 - $10. This was more like it. Much more fruity beast with lots of tropical flavours like pineapple and lychee. Fresh and clean but plenty to keep the interest, this is a bit like Cloudy Bay used to be before it went to become mundane. An absolute bargain...

Re: Cleanskins
New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc 2008 - First one that I bough and it was a disappontment. In the store they had a tasting that included a couple of Shirazes that were very good indeed. It was a blistering hot day and I'd just been walking in the Sun for a mile, I wanted cold, white and zingy. It was all...

Cleanskins
I'd sort of come across this before but not to the same level that I've seen it in Australia. A cleanskin wine is a bottle with a basic label saying what the wine is (Shiraz, Sauvignon Blanc, Chianti etc), the country, year and a code on a small white label. The highest price that I have seen is abo...

Re: 1977 Dow
Patently a bad bottle caused by the seepage, the colour of this is indicative of the cork having failed a long time. You did the right thing to open up, it would have been a crying shame to wait another ten years to find it in an even more deteriorated state. Good to see the next one was in good sha...

There's a Martinez, which although beginning with 'Ma' is patently not a Malvedos.

Crikey, what a night. As with everybody else, thanks to Alex, Julian and Derek for sorting this one out. Derek's willingness to travel around the country to pick stuff up was truly admirable.
