Re: Sep 24th Fonseca vs Warres head to head

Hi, I am likely to be down in London that weekend to celebrate a wedding anniversary. I have a real soft spot for Warres so this looks interesting. Would there be room for Rebecca and me? As for something from the 80's, 1980 might suit? Fonseca should be ready I would have thought and Warres made an...

Re: 1985 Fonseca

Oh dear. Any reason for the poor showing? Either a dodgy case or - we are wondering - the wine could be shutting down a bit again. We saw something like this happen to the '60s a few years ago, when the wines showed quite poorly for a couple of years and then came bouncing back to be the beauties t...

I picked up on that vegetal character as well. For some reason I prefer the 2004 at the moment. But both are excellent LBV's.

I had a look at the time but couldn't see the words unfiltered. With the tannins and the full cork I can only agree with your conclusion.

2002 Cruz LBV

Bottled after four years according to the blurb. Dense black robe with magenta tints. Wild dark savoury nose. Fleshy slightly forward palate of mulberries and anise. Tannins fine and build on the finish. A little heat afterwards but otherwise a rather excellent LBV. Settles over two days and the hea...

Re: Tawny suggestion pls

Despite being contentious, the Warres Optima 10 year old is currently £7.11 a bottle (500mL) at Tesco. Decent price. Claiming to have the 2005 Noval LBV for £9.46 per bottle. Haven't seen the 2005 about so not sure about that? I presume that it will follow on from the 2004 in being a Quinta do Noval...

Re: Tawny suggestion pls

Thanks for all the suggestions; I'll be picking up a bottle over the next couple of days ready for this weekend. I think I would definitely like to try a good 20yr tawny myself sometime (to see if I can be convinced) but that a 10yr is probably more suitable for this tasting to fit the right place ...

1996 Niepoort LBV

A recent re-release from what I can gather. From a half bottle and popped and poured. Fully resolved tawny colour. A slightly volatile nose of walnuts and brown spice. Reminded me of a Seppelt Para Liqueur Fortified. A long palate of nuts and spice with chocolate becoming dominant after an hour. Not...

1975 Warre

Going from memory unfortunately. I seem to have had a better bottle than others on the forum. It was mostly resolved but still ruby at the core. It was earthy and savoury with anise present. Medium length finish. A nice port and better than the other 75's I have had recently but perhaps not the best...

1997 Niepoort

It was a leaker so it had to go. Opened a little volatile. After a few hours the fruit came up but still had more volatility than I would expect for a VP of this age. Thankfully the powerful chewy palate of ripe fruit balanced the wine. Some honey which I often get with Niepoort as well. Very Good b...

I managed to dig into the stash and sadly the 1994 is a Delaforce. Will need to source a bottle or buy in as suits.

Re: 1977 Graham

Different purchases in different countries so it could well be poor storage. When you aren't buying from the source on release that is always a concern. Having said that, there seems to be a difference in opinion on this port. Some people have written tasting notes noting the disjointed alcohol in p...

Re: Madeira Recommendations

Just thought I should mention that I'm currently sipping on a 2001 Barbieto Bual Colheita Madeira. Very nice and perhaps it might be what you desire. Walnuts and spice but more oxidative notes with keener acidity when compared to a Colheita Port.

1995 Quinta do Vesuvio

This was a dark black-red colour on opening. Immediately brought to mind wild cherry and chocolate fudge with beeswax and honey. Voluptuous fruit with a minty top note. Warming finish but not aggressive. Reminded me of an Australian VP of sorts. Very enjoyable and it was consumed in the one sitting....

1977 Graham

A bit nervous about this one as the last bottle a few years ago was a pale spiritous monster. What a difference. On opening it was moderately opaque red with pale rim. A nose of blackberries with icing that I get in Grahams. Sweet and viscous on the palate without any heat. Long finish. 4 hours on a...

For those asking to be placed on the reserve list, your request is duly noted, however, I do know that the venue can accomodate 24 but I do not know if the Ambassador has any other dignitaries or sports officianados that he would like to attend. Enquiries are being made at this time and I will upda...
