Tom, generated electricity has been around for over 100 years   From what I was told last year, the majority of the Douro region was without electricity until the early to mid 70's. So it wasn't just Vargellas that was without power. I'll be back there in less than 2 weeks, so I'll ask an...

I think most people have no idea what prices are in their home areas. Us Port geeks got prices memorized better than...well, I'll stop there before I get in trouble  The average tourist has no idea and probably won't remember what they drank. So they have to buy right then and there, and the po...

The Douro region didn't get electricity until the early to mid 1970's. Quinta de Vargellas first got electricity about 1975. Now days almost everything is temp controlled in the Douro, so Douro Bake should be completely a thing of the past in the near future. As far as making it sweeter because of D...

NV Taylor Tawny 10YO (bottled 2007)

Pick this up at Costco today for $21. The color is a dark red with some faint orange in it. A simple nose of carmel and nuts. The palate has some simple dried fruit and a light dose of spices. There still are some very noticable tannins in this young tawny. Unfortunately, it is quite simple on the p...

NV Niepoort White (Dry White)

Cracked this baby about 3 minutes ago, so here is the first TN. Served well chilled in a standard Port style glass with no ice and no tonic, LOL! Light honey color with some prominent orange highlights. Blueberry and some citrus on the nose, but this has more of a basic ruby nose than a dry white no...

If thats the green door, then that is definitely not Niepoort. Niepoort's is a rather large door where a small truck could drive through it. A there is no exterior "Niepoort" sign anywhere to be found, you just kinda need to know that is the building you're looking for. Kinda funny when al...

Planting grapes by varietial is a relatively new thing for the douro. In the past vineyards were a hodge-podge mix of numerous different grape varietals all mixed together. The farmers couldn't tell you what was what. That still holds true for many Quintas to this day. Although that is slowly changi...

Its been about 6 hours now and the touch of heat earlier has mostly integrated leaving it with an even softer more feminine touch on the palate. I think I prefer it ever so slightly better with that touch of heat earlier. The finish is still about the same. This is a solid LBV and one that I've real...

1999 Ferreira Late Bottled Vintage

This was bottled in 2003 and I have no idea if this is a tradional or filtered LBV as the label doesn't indicate. There was no sediment when I decanted at 1400 hours today. I've had a few glasses so far and it is a solid LBV. The color is very dark with just an almost imperceptible hint of fading at...

Alan, just remember the weather in Gaia, next to the Atlantic Ocean, is much different than in the Douro valley, some 60 miles inland.

Opps  I forgot one.

Vista Alegre Old White Port. This was aged in cask approximately 25 years. I must say an excellant old white port and if you can get your hands on a bottle or two Tom, grab them.

They have been producing Vargellas as a SQVP since the 1820's. Here is a link to some discussion on it with a reply from a family member of the Fladgate Partnership.

I've had a number of decent cheap whites and although some were not good IMO, they all seem to get lumped together as being bad. Lagrima's are quite enjoyable to me in small amounts when very chilled on a warm day. Dry whites don't really excite me overall, but that is just my palate preference. The...

Buy one that is at least 100% bigger than you think you'll use. So, if you're planning on getting a 200 bottle one because that is how many bottles you think you'll aquire, buy the 400 bottle cooler. Trust me, they fill up a lot faster than you think.

So on my bike ride this morning, I passed by the local donut shop. THey had an advertisement in the window showing they now make a peanut butter and jelly donut.

Now, nothing against a regular jelly filled donut, but the thought of putting PB into a donut too was just sickening :o
