Re: Vintage 2022

I think the last seriously challenging years where no or almost no VP was made were 2002, 1993, 1981, 1973 & 1971. As Tom says, about once a decade (although I bet modern winemaking and a willingness to declare small quantities might have helped some of those). 1993 was a wash-out. I think 2002 ...

Re: Encostas de Provezende / Quinta dos Espinheiro

They are on the road to Provensende from Pinhão. I really don’t know very much about them. We were driving to Provensende and I saw I sign advertising wine tasting so we followed it. There was a tiny shop manned by a nice lady who let us try their ruby , white and tawny . It was clearly not a commer...

NV Encostas de Provezende Quinta dos Espinheiros White

I bought this from this producer’s shop back in 2014 in an unlabled bottle with a t-cork. There was no selo. Deep amber in the middle. Fading to a light straw. Maybe even a touch of green. Subdued nose. Quite floral and fresh: elderflowers predominate. In the mouth, it is more of the same. It remind...

Re: Three-word places to drink Port

you could bring.bottle.port to a field just off the A21 north-west of Tunbridge, in Kent. That’s almost tempting. Maybe I could rummage around the map, find addresses, from which phone numbers, ask who owns the field, and get permission for a picnic. That’s not very far from me. And I think someone...

late.bottled.vintage (also Alaska).
another.glass.port (Mexico).
another.pint.port (China).

another.pint.port appears to have an advantage of being in a moderately-accessible place: Qingdao in China...

Re: "Leve Seco" White Port

That sounds like a place to visit on my next trip to Porto. I don’t know his Ports well but really enjoyed the “Trans Douro Express” which was a set of three reds from the Baixo Corgo, Cima Corgo & Douro Superior. I tried to encourage him to do a similar run of three Ports but apparently that ma...

Re: Vintage 2022

I agree. Also, I’m sure that many producers will have weather stations on their properties. I’d have thought you’d want quite a sophisticated one if you are managing a big quinta. It is a pity that even snapshot data isn’t available.

1999 Quinta de la Rosa LBV

It is a little unclear from the label whether this is filtered or not. Decanting produced a modest amount of sediment, suggesting light filtration but could also be a fitlered wine that threw a heavy crust. The colour is a deep blood-red in the centre fading through light red to the edge. Maybe a to...

Re: Vintage 2022

I think Tom has mentioned in the past that there aren’t many publicly-available weather stations in the Douro. I think the only ones used to be in Régua and Villa Real, although there seem to be more, now. I did wonder if the reason it was hottest in Pinhão was because it was actually the hottest pl...

Re: Vintage 2022

I’m pretty sure that it was Pinhão in the Douro: the Symingtons put something online about it. They suggested that it was the hottest temperature recorded in Portugal, although I have heard a few other candidates for that rather dubious record. It sounds much too hot much too early for me for a clas...

Re: Georgian Fortifieds

That is a very interesting post, Jacob. During my career as a civil servant in the 1990's I was involved in a consultancy project to help with the re-establishment of a land register in Georgia to allow citizens to reclaim land and property that had been seized by the Soviet Union. We hosted a dele...

Re: Decanting method experimentation

Although totally bug free, sterile supplies can sometimes have a bit of a medical smell to them, so there's a risk that overkill could cause issues. Isn’t it likely that the sanitisation process that gives the smell since that involves treatment with chemicals rather than just steam / heat / radiat...

Re: Filtration

I place my metal coffee filter in a suitably large funnel and decant directly into a decanter. Yes: I was more thinking about using the glass carafe as a decanter since it has a nice shape and a low centre of gravity, even with the filter inserted. Having had a few near misses with towers of funnel...

Re: Filtration

I have been experimenting. I took a bottle of Quinta de la Rosa 1999 LBV and decanted it into a jug through the funnel which Glenn linked to above. This has a reasonably-fine mesh and is what I use for most of my decanting. Unsurprisingly, it caught a decent amount of sediment but also decanted the ...

Re: 2016 Quinta da Corte LBV

I’ve just had a look at some of the reference books. At the time of Liddell & Price’s book (1992), it was owned by Pacheco & Irmãos Lda. They say: “they have run the quinta since almost the beginning ot the century, having inherited it from the ancestors of the Cirne family, whho, with the P...

Georgian Fortifieds

We went to Georgia on holiday this year. I’d highly recommend it. The food is absolutely excellent, from small places to expensive restaurants. Georgia is one of a number of countries which has a legitimate claim to have invented wine. They have a very high number of indigenous grapes, most of which...

Re: 2019 Quinta do Cume

Per their website they are next to Provesende which I think is a very good location. It looks like the Quinta is owned by a surgeon with a professional wine maker making the wines. I can’t see any mention of Port on their website: only table wines, so perhaps this one was their first attempt. I do s...

Re: Filtration

I have been wondering if there is an advantage of using something that is non-absorbent for filtering. My assumption is that if a liquid is absorbed and then de-absorbed there is much more likely to be an impact on flavour than if the filter fabric is completely inert. This could be from a flavour o...

Re: Filtration

The “Aerating Funnel” from that set is the one Churchill sent to me and I really like it, although it is a bit too wide to sit in the necks of many of my smaller decanters. I wish it was just 10% narrower! I admire your ability to stand a bottle up for a few days before opening. I tend to think: “wh...

I tried this one at their lodge in Porto last year. I realised I didn’t known Cálem’s Ports very well, despite them being quite a famous shipper. Like you, I was rather impressed by the 10-year-old. I couldn’t immediately think of a big commercial shipper that made a better one.

Re: Filtration

I have been using one of these for about three years. It is excellent. I have a Bodum filter coffee maker which has one of those in a matching jug which is excellent for this sort of thing, because of the very large capacity in the filter. If I didn’t like my proper Port decanters as much, I’d prob...
