Re: 2024: Undisturbed & Other 1970s - Tues 8th October

I didn’t attend the tasting, but I am very interested to read about the 1970 becoming less reliable / showing old age / losing fruit. Didn’t we say something similar about the 1960 vintage 15 years ago? And about the 1963 vintage about 10 years ago? Do I sense a pattern? Do we need to leave our 1970...

Re: NV 30 Year Old Moscatel Bodegas Malaga Virgen

Malaga is one of those wines which lasts virtually forever - it’s fortified, it has high sugar content and the best have high acidity. I’ve drunk bottles which are decades old and which have been delicious - I had one recently which was bottled about 60 years ago.

Re: 50 Year Old Tawnies - 1 October 2024

Thanks for posting the score sheet Mike. That’s a very interesting result. Very surprised by the Sandeman! Most people seem to have gone for power over finesse in their 50yo blends with, in my limited experience, the notable exception of Sandeman. Their biggest and most powerful tawny is the 40yo wi...

Yes please, someone post their thoughts on the wines and the scoresheet for those of us who couldn’t be there.

I’m thinking of Glenn, obviously, since I’m British and therefore only drink Vintage Port.

Re: Port brand abbreviations

Carlos Alonso Douro Wines Lda have vineyards around Alijó. While mainly a winemaker, they have also been making Vintage Port for the last decade or so and have declared several vintages in those years. Their Vintage Ports are bottled, shipped and sold under the Piano brand. (Their Peace & Love b...

Just seen on Instagram that Carlos Alonso Douro Wines Lda. declared a 2022 Vintage Port. Now added to the list.

Since this is about their fifth vintage, we need an abbreviation for them…

£59 a bottle for a limited edition, old vines, highly selective Port is a ridiculously good price. Nice buy!

1963 Gonzalez Byass

We only have one tasting note for this Port so I thought it was about time to post another. Gonzalez Byass 1963. Decanted 4 hours. Rose red colour, 40% opaque. Gentle spiced cedar wood and redcurrant jelly on the nose. Elegant on the palate with the redcurrant showing beautifully, clean and fresh. H...

I don’t often post in this thread these days, but I called in to Four Walls Wines on my way home this afternoon. I couldn’t resist this: IMG_9311.jpeg IMG_9315.jpeg IMG_9314.jpeg With an IVP sello the wine was clearly released prior to 2003. Judging by the type-face of the label and the bottle, my g...

Ever since my wife gave me a(n opened) bottle of Vesuvio 1989 for Christmas 1992 we’ve had a tradition of having a very recent VP as the red wine to go with our Christmas lunch. Most years this is Vesuvio, but this year it’s going to be Cálem. I’ve said elsewhere that I think Carlos Alves and his wi...

Re: Corkage on the rise

I guess the corkage policy depends on how busy the restaurant is. If they’re packed out every night with a waiting list as long as your arm, they can charge what they like. Personally, I eat out for the food and not for the wine. If my favourite restaurant has a good wine list at sensible prices tha...

Perhaps an email to someone at Fonseca is in order? Does anyone have a contact that they could ask? Was Guimaraens a separate company that released its own Ports back in the day? And why do the more recent (1982, 2015) bottles of Quinta do Cruzeiro say Guimaraens but not Fonseca? (I.e. does TFP sti...
