The whole event lasted around 90 minutes, so it was only a brief opportunity to get to know the wines. I have a soft spot for mature claret and still have a few bottles left from the 1980s. They rarely get opened these days, but the children are home for dinner so it’s justified to open a nice bottle.

Did I mention that neither of them drink red wine? They prefer 20YO tawny…

A point of academic interest I’ve just discovered in my notes from the tasting, the corks of the 1884 and 1890 bottles were unbranded.

The 1896 cork was branded. I didn’t get to see the 1900 or 1908 corks, but 1912 and later were all branded.

Yeah. It’s obvious from this tasting that Taylor peaks at the age of 113 years from vintage and then falls off a steep cliff over the next 12 years.
