Re: Latest buy
I don’t often post in this thread these days, but I called in to Four Walls Wines on my way home this afternoon. I couldn’t resist this: IMG_9311.jpeg IMG_9315.jpeg IMG_9314.jpeg With an IVP sello the wine was clearly released prior to 2003. Judging by the type-face of the label and the bottle, my g...

Thanks for the overall review Mike. It’s always useful to read summaries like this of where vintages are in their lifespan.

Re: 2022 Calem
Ever since my wife gave me a(n opened) bottle of Vesuvio 1989 for Christmas 1992 we’ve had a tradition of having a very recent VP as the red wine to go with our Christmas lunch. Most years this is Vesuvio, but this year it’s going to be Cálem. I’ve said elsewhere that I think Carlos Alves and his wi...

]Mystery bottle from an auction...any help with identifying pre pulling the cork would be much appreciated. James keith appears to be the importer and claimed 1930s by the auction house...#help :tpf: :) Not a clue so I think you're just going to have to make it over to Newport (Essex) for the Chris...

Re: Corkage on the rise
I guess the corkage policy depends on how busy the restaurant is. If they’re packed out every night with a waiting list as long as your arm, they can charge what they like. Personally, I eat out for the food and not for the wine. If my favourite restaurant has a good wine list at sensible prices tha...

Re: 50 Year Old Tawnies - 1 October 2024
I'm really sorry Mike, as this is a tasting that I very much wanted to attend, but it now seems unlikely that I'll be able to make it.
Could you drop me from being a confirmed attendee to a reserve please?

Re: Wine themed Films
I’ve just got back from watching Widow Clicquot.
It was so-so. My suggestion to anyone thinking of going to see it is perhaps to wait until it’s on Amazon / Netflix / somewhere.

Good luck with the Camino. That’s a lot of walking.
Did you buy one so you can tell us whether it’s worth €11?

Re: Port brand abbreviations
Perhaps an email to someone at Fonseca is in order? Does anyone have a contact that they could ask? Was Guimaraens a separate company that released its own Ports back in the day? And why do the more recent (1982, 2015) bottles of Quinta do Cruzeiro say Guimaraens but not Fonseca? (I.e. does TFP sti...

Re: NV Valadao Tawny 10YO
Very interesting - it appears to be a Quarles Harris sub-brand. Or maybe a brand owned /created specifically for Intermarché which QH won the tender to supply that year?

2022 Fonseca Guimaraens
Attractive warm blackcurrant on the nose. Balanced entry with the fruit showing as a bright and acidic blackcurrant. The acidity is piercing, cleaning away the tannins that attempt to camp on the insides of the cheeks. The fruit remains bright and fragrant, carrying a lovely freshness throughout the...

Blueberry nose, plenty of fruit but also some clean spirit showing over the top of the fruit. Good balance on entry, with the fruit being supported by the hidden tannins and gentle acidity. Nicely balanced, the tannins take their time to gather together and grip the cheeks. Dry core to the fruity af...

Expressive nose, smelling of old-fashioned Fruit Chews (blackcurrant with many other fruit flavours added) with a nice green leaf added. Smooth entry, the green tea shines strongly in the sweet fruit, with the tannins seeming to emerge from the tea. Fresh and elegant palate, the fruit dominates but ...

Attractive floral perfumed nose. Sweet fruit slides smoothly onto the palate, with the acidity and soft tannins coming into view on the mid-palate. Nicely structured, nicely balanced. The acidity builds to a crescendo, forcing the wine to be swallowed - but that just reveals a lovely, long and delig...

Wonderful perfumed fruit on the nose, sweet without being jammy with a deep tone of tobacco leaf. Balanced entry, rich and ripe blackcurrant with just the right amount of acidity to compliment the fruit; a little sprinkle of peppercorn adds a frisson of heat to the fruit and the tannins are so fine-...

Maroon in colour with a narrow rim. An unusual nose, elegant fruit, almost honeyed in its delicacy. There is an attractive sharpness to the fruit on the palate, giving a lovely fresh mouthfeel to the wine. The acidity on the palate highlights the quality of the fruit; the subtle tannins weaving a wa...

Amazing floral blackcurrant on the nose, extremely expressive. Balanced entry, the fruit fresh and alive. The fruit feels ripe but picked in time to preserve the perfect level of acidity to keep the ripeness just at perfection. Bright and alive, the tannins are just like those found when chewing a r...

Subdued smells of ripe fruit with a slight smoky overtone shine from the glass. Smooth on the palate, with the fruit not sweet and slightly bitter but shining brightly; dominated by the blackcurrant yet with the acidity supporting the wine rather than dominating it. There are tannins in play, but th...

2022 Quinta do Vesuvio Capela
Fresh blackcurrant cordial on the nose with an attractive mineral streak to it. The wine is well balanced on the palate, big and full of ...

2022 Quinta do Vesuvio
Attractive sweet blackcurrant on the nose, ripe and quite dense. Dense, sweet fruit on entry, followed by a wave of massive acidity and tannins. The wave washes away all sensation of fruit for a few moments, before the fruit floats back up to the surface and the conflict settles down to a more harmo...
