Aguardente, I believe, has a concentration of around 77% alcohol. And Andy, yes, you can make an almost-odourless spirit of high concentration... Everclear... Grain alcohol from the US... 95% abv or 190 proof. :? Yup, it tastes like 95% alcohol too. In fact, shortly after high school, we had...

Removing Stubborn Labels from bottles
I'll throw this topic into Meaningless Drivel, but feel free to move it. It could pertain to labels from any type of bottle, but seeing as how I pretty much drink only Port, no dry wines, my pointed question relates to port. Not sure if that qualifies as a "Port Conversation." So here it i...

Ugh... Alan, this sound horrendous. I just can't see how mixing one magnificent drink with another magnificent drink from a completely different family of spirits can lead to anything but disappointment. However, in the name of science, I will promptly make a trip to the local beer store and purchas...

Given the price of a bottle of 2 year old VP these days I can't believe that cost is a real issue for premium wines from Premier League shippers. This would make sense, but we have to remember that the producers see only a portion of the price of that we the chump on the other end of the wallet wil...

Any decent first-timer (non age-designated) Tawny?
I just came to a realization tonight that I have never tried a "tawny" port that does not have an age-designation.

Are there any that have jumped out at you that would be good to try as a 'first-time' tawny?
Todd

Mines a combo of Jay, Derek, and Alex. The younger stuff, say 1990-forward, and the cheaper stuff (under $30) get opened whenever without care. The older and more expensive stuff I try and open with other port loving friends so others can share in the fun. my word Andy, you can get VP for UNDER $30...

You're right Alan, it does beg the question Alan, how exactly does one produce a VP that will mature faster and be ready to drink in less time than a 'classic VP'??? ;? Tom, I have left my last two VPs (more out of coincidence than planning) in the decanter for over two weeks, stealing small...

Re: This is the sub-£10 category.
Hold on. This is the sub-£10 category. And would I win the 1000 meters at the No-Training-Except-Port Fat-Boy Olympics? Maybe. But would that make me an Olympic athlete? Not in my wife’s eyes, let me tell you. Julian, I have been trying to convince my wife and friends that I am the world Champion f...
