1963 Offley

1963 Offley Boa Vista "The Sampler" on Upper Street has this in their little machine. 4 quid or so gets you a mini glass, and while small, it gives a decent enough impression of the wine. This effort, which was likely never anything to write home about, appears to be drying out and on its ...

1995 Fonseca Guimaraens

Served at the end of a 1995 bordeaux horizontal (notes here: http://www.wine-pages.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=024566) Still WAY too young, but this was a nice, if simple port to finish the night off with. Pretty cloying, but without some of the structure to help keep everything in ba...

Re: 1982 Croft

I liked this at the outset of the tasting, putting it initially third behind the 83 and the 86. Pretty light and fruity in the mouth, like drinking a 22 year old blond cheerleader from Kansas. Not going to change the way you understand quantum mechanics, but still manages to entertain you, for at le...

Re: 2000 Croft

This bottle was quite tricky for me to score. Obviously very young and quite closed, it showed decent structure, but it was hard to get a look at the fruit though the acid and tannin. I have really enjoyed Croft VP lately, so I may pick one up as a flyer. 84? (with 89-91 potential?)

Re: 1970 Warre

Very disappointed with this bottle. Clearly the lightest and youngest of the bottles (I guessed a 67), this was quite thin and harsh throughout, without much structure or lift. Improved a bit as the night went on, but was quite far from a charmer. Wolfgang commented that it was not a representative ...

Re: 2003 Niepoort

What was left in the bottle (as opposed to on my right leg) I quite enjoyed. Clearly a tannic monster, but showing good balance and structure, albeit a bit closed on the palate. Of all the wines consumed this evening, this will likely be the only one I will be seeking more bottles of. 86 for drinkin...

Re: 1980 Taylor

Quite a nice surprise! I have had really poor experiences with 80s Taylor VP, but this was quite a lovely little wine. Black cherries and brown sugar on the nose, with maybe just a bit of cinnamon. Actually likely the best/most complete nose of the night. Pleasant in the mouth, with smooth transitio...

Re: 1986 Taylor Quinta de Terra Feita

Very solid wine, and likely my #2 of the night (the 1980 Taylor would be quite close). This was another very enjoyable and mature tasting port, lacking depth/complexity but still giving great pleasure. 88pts

Re: 1977 Warre

This got a bit better over time, but I was rather disappointed by this showing. A bit thin and dirty on the nose, with not much structure or acid in the mouth, and finishing a bit harsh (the finish did improve a bit in time). Not bad, per se, but really not what I would have expected from a 77 Warre...

Re: 1983 Warre

This was my wine of the night for drinking today. Pretty classic port nose of sticky cherries, mixed with just a bit of burnt sugar. Well balanced and mature in the mouth, with everything right where it should be. Not very thought provoking or evocative, but very tasty and in an excellent place on t...

1 extra space TONIGHT for 1995 Bordeaux off-line

Not port, not port -- i know, i know. I am organizing a tasting of 2nd tier 1995 bordeaux (e.g., LLC, VCC, Clement, Palmer, etc) at 7:30 tonight at a restaurant called Toulouse Lautrec. Someone recently dropped out and we have a free seat if anyone is free/interested. Three course meal for 23gbp, pl...

Sorry Axel, I seem to have '94d my remaining 87s niepoorts, and only seem to have one left.

One the bright side, I do have an 85 grahams, if that'd be of use.

Re: 2008 Quinta do Vesuvio (WiP Cask Sample)

WOW! Again -- a very pleasant showing for such a baby of a port. Sweet, loads of baby fat to chew on (if you're into that sort of thing), and seeming like it will make a great casual drinker in 10-15 years.
