Re: A newbie question on provenance
I have 10 bottles each from cases of 12 of Dow 1983 and Dow 1985 which I suspect might all prove to be flawed. Some kind of bacterial thing, it is not TCA. So you bought opened cases with 10 wines left, and it seems they all are flawed? It's sad that someone might do that, but not a total surprise....

Re: Latest buy
Anyone had a recent buy? I got 2 x Churchill's 2011 and 2 x Noval 2007, both at auction. I also found in my basement: 12 x Casa do Douro Colheita 1963, 42 x Casa do Douro Colheita Lágrima 1963, 54 x Casa do Douro Colheita 1964, and 6 x Casa do Douro Colheita Branco 1964. Good find. Re: Latest buy
:!: :!: How large is your basement that you can find 114 bottles of Port? I had also previously found 70-something bottles of Quinta Val da Figueira 10yo :o There's still one unopened cabinet, it has a bunch of individual cardboard boxes, with very old dates written on them, but I don't kno...

n.b. While the above suggests that the level could well be higher (from a risk perspective), and I agree that aesthetically that would be more pleasing, I don't think you can fairly call it a "poor fill" unless the volume of liquid supplied is less than specified. I agree with this. But l...

Great buy!
Although in my opinion they should rethink that bottle, the fact that the neck has such a large empty portion just looks...wrong.

I assume blending in general (in the winery). The quantities you'll be handling are so small (in terms of surface area and time of exposure) that the evaporation can be regarded as negligible (unless you leave them exposed to air for a very, very long time).

I find 6ºC even too cold for light-bodied white table wines (too many scents are lost, in my opinion; I like 7/8ºC), let alone tawny Port.

Re: NV Quinta do Noval Crusted 1961
Does anyone know why it has a year and a bottling date? Current practice for Crusted is that the big year on the bottle is the bottling year and the contents are usually a mixture of different vintages (sometimes disclosed, sometimes not). Was this effectively a LBV? (PS. A fascinating Port to try,...

Well, I obviously cannot compete with your knowledge of Noval (although I put forward Noval merely as an example, I could've mentioned other producers that have been releasing their main VP's almost every year for the last decade , give or take). But answering your question: I would compare a Chryse...
