Re: Latest buy

Yesterday I've opened another bottle of these old ones. I picked one who had lost quite a bit - so I was wondering if it is still good. After the removal of the cap I saw that the cork has fallen into the bottle... no good sign. I don't know how long ago that happend... So I poured a glass, and hey ...

Re: Latest buy

It isn't very sweet I must say - way less than i would have expected from a white Port. Now after beeing open for a while it got even better. Walnut now, fresh an citrus with very nice plum. I must say I relly enjoy it. But dry as I know it from some old wood-driven Whiskies or Champagnes it is not ...

Re: Latest buy

I've opened a bottle of the Special White. It had a regular corck, no stopper.
It is still very enjoyable to drink, it has a nice elegant hazelnut nose, in the mouth as well alongside with plum and cinamon.
Let's see how it improves (or not) in the next days.

Nice story - fun fact, I bought my bottle at auction as well :)
Besides the handwriting on the Label, mine had a stamp on top of the wax seal, so I was certain of its origin.

NV Dalva Tawny 40YO

NV Presidential 40YO
light brown with red. Quite a light but fresh nose. Comes with a light mouthfeel. Some strawberries, figs. The finish could be longer, but it is pleasant, some nuts more like hazelnut.
Liked it but the Barros 1960 was better. 89/100 (bottled 2019)

light red still quite dark in the colour. Some spices, herbs and a touch earthy in the finish. Lots of plums and some nuts (more cashewish). Did not decant it, drunk over several days. Had it's peak on day 2 for me.

Re: Latest buy

Checking a few recent auction results - it looks like prices are coming off the boil. Not quite low enough to get me buying younger vintages yet, but vintages like '70 and '77 are not far off their pre-pandemic prices. Does coming off the boil mean that prices drop? Sorry for asking, but english is...

Re: Fake whisky

Fake whiskies are a huge problem - I would never buy old Macallan's from someone I don't trust - and even then only with max caution.
I do know Claudio (Bernasconi), the owner myself. He is a really passionate and generous guy. As he handled the case speaks for it self.

Re: The right order

Thank you guys for your replies! When we have a Whisky tasting, we always start with a "tongue opener" dram - a light with no more than 46% ABV. As this might also work with Port, I tend to go with the SQVP - as I as well expect it to be the weaker one, or I pour them both and decide from ...

Laying tawny down?

Hi all

Due to shortage of space for standing bottles in my wine cabinet I was wondering if I can lie down some of the Tawny bottles as well?
Is there any disadvantage for the Port?

Thank you!

No, I don't have any - still on the voyage. My best so far were a Barros Vintage from 1978, Grahams Vintage 1970, Amandio White Colheita from 1945 and a Grahams Colheita from 1870. I've had way more Colheitas/Aged Ports than Vintages.

Hello together I'm a swiss guy who started to dive into Port about 6 month ago. Since then a whole new world has been revealed to me. Lucky as I am, I've met a friend who has good knowledge an even better sources for real Port treasures. Exept Port, I am in love with Whisky (Scotch for 95%) for many...
