The social history aspect is fascinating - and the revival of interest in obscure wine in the internet age means you can actually buy many of the wines for which ther...

Re: Decanters

@ JacobH - by 'decanter tags' I presume you mean what are called by silver collectors these days 'wine labels' (or sometimes 'decanter labels')? The eighteenth century name was 'bottle tickets' because of course wine came in barrel not bottle and was put in a bottle/carafe/decanter for table by your...

Once can buy 23 litre glass carboys reasonably easily via the net (although delivery is another matter entirely).

Re: 1980 Horizontal, 20 October 2021, B&F

@ all

There are currently four team adoptions - Dow (from me) Taylor (from AHB) and Fonseca and Kopke (from Tony). There will not be an adjustment for the NN, because Julian is lovely.

@CPR1 - Harry was going to be adopting your Niepoort - but if you can't find the Sandeman I'll get nac to bring the Sandeman and Harry can adopt that instead. Let us know.

That is a truly satisfying picture

I'm available for the tasting where we drink all four bottles, it really would be the ultimate port geekery.

Re: 1991 Croft

I agree that Croft 1991 is a wonderful port - it was the easy winner of the 1991 horizontal we did 18 months ago - NN was 5th or 6th so we are not swayed by name - but your 8-10 hours sounds spot on for this particular bottle. I have another half case so easy to revisit/adjust idc.

1991 Croft

p'n'decant'n'pour Blocky. Massive cassis on nose, massive chocolate on finish. Impressive. But needs time to open out. + 24 hrs 80% opaque dark red juice. Beguiling nose of tobacco and herbs, the blackcurrant floating behind. Weighty palate of South African plums stewed with star anise and cinnamon....

This was a quite astonishing evening. Kudos to Neil for curating. It was humbling to be there and to drink 887 years of portious history. And lovely to see everyone. Hurrah.

1963 Quinta de Noval

A rich mature red.

Lovely red-fruited nose.

Palate: still red-fruited. Bakewell tart!

A delicious bottle of this sometimes variable port.

Unknown UK bottler.

Consumed 31/8/21
