Re: 2021 Virtual Tasting #10 - Quevedo Mixology Afters

@ Glenn E - had my second Pfizer shot on Thursday. I am not reet. System clearly occupied elsewhere, cognitive and physical processes running at significantly throttled clock speed. Will no doubt sort itself out, but downtime definitely required.

Re: 2019 Declarations

We really need a producer to chime in at this point; we are all just theorising. That said, I am nevertheless going to add my partly experiential and partly theoretical halfpennyworth. Broad brush: I would say it is MUCH more common that 'four times a century' that it is not really possible to produ...

NV Cabral 40 YO Tawny

Bottling circa 1960s - UK label, no selo, wax seal, bottle with bulbous neck that it took a Durand with which to get the elderly cork out whole. Some very fine dirty sediment, consistent (in my mainly madeira-based experience) with a cask-aged wine having been bottled circa 60 years ago. What I woul...

A bottle of Churchill 1982 would say yes to that theme.

1970 Warre

Findlater Mackie & Todd bottling with the infamous plastic capsule, safely removed with only one brief and relatively harmless episode of knife through skin. 2 hr decant. 60% opaque, pale rim. Early, Parma violets on the nose. Later, restrained nose of mixed currants and the inky structure becomes c...

Re: 1991 Horizontal?

While I am a little doubtful that organisational ability and broad port ownership are necessarily correlated (I think I am quite good at organising, but have barely 150 different ports) I feel it ill behoves me (as a mere amateur, and a recent arrival on this forum at that) to direct that those of t...

Re: Wednesday 28th April 2021 - Online Churchill tasting with the Port Forum

I do feel that Johnny has set the all-time standard for the presenter being almost invisible behind the mirror of the forest of bottles being tasted by the audience. Not even Julian could have polished all of those off. It was absolutely splendid to see; albeit, since Johnny did not consume all of t...

Re: 1991 Horizontal?

Maybe we put Terra Feita in early December, say Wednesday 1st, and 1987 in late January? [I am not offering to arrange the latter, I have precisely 0 bottles of 1987 port]

Pereira d'Oliveira Malvasia 1991

Another good solid clear brown wine, yellow rim. Nose a bit dumb. Dates, prunes, stem ginger on the palate. Lingering dried fruit sweetness. Very good, and typical, but does not absolutely fill me with joy like the Verdelho 1981. That may be me, rather than it. One of the samples discussed as part o...

Pereira d'Oliveira Verdelho 1981

A good solid brown with a green rim. On the nose, ah, d'Oliveiras, I love them so. You could sell this stuff as a men's fragrance - woodsy, spicy. So BROAD on the palate. Hints of marzipan and crystallised kiwi fruit and kumquat. Finish a mile long. Coffee, late. I keep returning to this. Brilliant ...

Blandy's Sercial 1980

Dark orange, green rim. Extraordinary nose, not in the least bit reminiscent of sercial. Palate indescribable in wine terms. Fennel salami? Very long, dry, acidic, finish. Lots of VA (1.3g/l). I am not sure what to make of this, to be honest. On the one hand it is a genuinely thrilling drink. On the...

Henriques & Henriques 2001 Single Harvest Sercial

A clear light orange. Heady nose that frankly I could smell all day. Preserved cape gooseberries, I think. Big rich smoky palate with a kaleidoscope of dried stone fruit flavours - dried pears, dried apples, a bit of elvas peach. Then bone dry on the finish. The real thing, this. One of the samples ...

Blandy's Bual 10 Year Old

A clear light brown. Muted nose of sultanas. Pleasant palate of crazy jack's (unsulphured) apricots. A bit short on the finish. Decent but suffered rather from its company, I think (including the other Blandy's wine shown). Apparently might have contained some estufagem wines. One of the samples dis...

Henriques & Henriques 2007 Single Harvest Verdelho

Clear light brown. Very smoky on the nose. In the mouth full, ripe, a rather good note of quinces poached in spiced wine. Quite sweet for a verdelho on the finish, which has some muted cinnamon and nutmeg. Very pleasant, but not an exceptional verdelho, or an exceptional wine for Henriques & Henriqu...

Barbeito Sercial 10 YO

Another light gold wine. Distinctive iodine note on the nose. On the palate grapey despite the dryness and salinity. Note of preserved lemons. Almost like a vin jaune in flavour profile. This is a very attractive wine, punching well above its weight. One of the samples discussed as part of the Madei...

Barbeito Tinta Negra 2008

Light Gold Distinctive tinta negra petrol note on the nose. Tastes better than it smells - citrus warmth, then apricot. Second and third sips better than the first. Short spicy finish. One of the samples discussed as part of the Madeira Masterclass of the Big Fortified Tasting, presented by Rubina V...

Re: 1991 Horizontal?

Of the 80s and 90s I do not recall seeing recent horizontals of 99, 98, 96, 95, 93, 92, 90, 89, 88, 87, 86, 84, 82, 81, 80

80 and 92 are in the diary. At least two more of those (87, 82) might be of more than merely academic interest, albeit I have very little to offer...

1991 Churchill

A sample decanted two months ago and stored under argon for this delayed tasting. The darkest wine of the five Churchills being tasted tonight- 85% opaque still, red rim. Noble nose of rich dark fruit - pruneaux d'agen fourees - and dark chocolate. In the mouth, a little initial heat, fairly congrue...

2009 Churchill Gricha

Sample decanted two months ago and stored under argon. A full rich red right to the rim. Fairly full-bodied young-port nose, can still sense the TN content. Rich and smooth in the mouth. Cool but lush red fruits. Where are the tannins? They don't make an appearance at all, really. There's a faint pr...

2005 Churchill Gricha

Sample decanted and kept under argon for two months prior to tasting. A full but not deep red. Smells very young and spirity at first. Taste however fully resolved. Blueberry muffin on front palate, spice and attractive baked-red-fruit-carbohydrate-laden-goods later. Lovely fragrance. At first look ...

1998 Churchill Agua Alta

Decanted 3 days, stored in 'fridge. Darker rose than the '95 Pleasant but distinct coffee note on nose. Whiff of plum behind. Minty first attack in mouth, fades to juicy orange and griotte cherry on the pleasantly lengthy finish. Good wine. Better than the previous bottle I had. Much above the 95 in...

1995 Churchill Agua Alta

Sample for tasting, decanted and then under argon for two months.

Pale red, orange rim. Looks like a '75.

Hint of sulphur on the nose. Not quite clean?

Dusty rose petal jam on the palate.

Slightly dirty, hot finish.

Light. Not a success.

Consumed 28/4/21
