What port to drink with friends tomorrow?

Post by benread »

I am hosting dinner for 4 friends tomorrow. The two gentleman are confirmed port drinkers, albeit infrequent. Not so sure about the ladies. I want to give them two contrasting but complimentary bottles. Which two?

Dinner:

Potted cheshire cheese
Beef wellington
White chocolate mouse
Cheese

Take the Colheita 98 as aperitiv (slightly chilled) and the Corte 87 for the desert. If you need anything else with it, take the 94 Colheita, although I experienced quite some differences on the bottling dates. The 03 bottling is by far not that good than later bottlings.

Hope everything goes well

I've suggested going for the Niepoort colheita and the Gonzales VP so that your guests have a contrast in style to choose from.

the wifey here prefers colheitas as she thinks other ports have too much of the cough syrup taste.

Thank you all for your advice! I opened the Gonzelez 85 and the Corte 87. Only the boys were drinking so I have the Corte 87 to drink in the next few days!

We also have some Beef Wellington left as well!

So you ignored the vote and did what you wanted to do? Have you considered a job for the Irish government, running their next Lisbon referendum?

Or perhaps you could change your name to Ben Mugabe?

I do have an Irish wife!
Are you suggesting that is a necessary qualification, or a sufficient one?

Just an excuse for making my own decision based on valued input and not being bound contractually to a vote!
