I'm creating a new thread for listing port for sale at auctions (online, catalog, or otherwise) that folks find interesting. I am not suggesting that we in any way collude on bidding, etc, but of course if two people converse quietly on splitting up a mixed case or the like, that's their business.

(I thought we had this thread, but couldn't find it in the past year's worth of posts)

Some 60's and 70's have been showing up on WineCommune. I forgot to keep an eye on them last time and a 1970 Warre slipped by at $62 (though I suspect their proxy bid was much higher, given that other bottles were going at 140-150). Right now it's 70 Warre and 70 Dow and they've piqued my interest.

I don't trust wine commune at all for these types of 1 bottle transactions.
Chances are, it's someone who found a deal some place, most likely not properly stored
and decided to pawn it off on wine commune.

Good idea to have such a thread a counterpart to Port for sale by retailer.

Ah, so here's the WineCommune trick -- I only buy them when JJBuckley is the seller. You know its coming from their store, and can simply get it at a discount with some shrewd bidding.

How would people feel about having UK and US threads seperately? Most of us are only looking for port in one location or the other!

I do like both threads though.

I would not recommend bothering to bid until the weekend, and you will want to be online when the auction concludes as there is lots of 1$ upping at the last. If bidding actually showed your username in the bid history, it would be worth it simply so that we knew who was "in it," but bidders are anonymized.

Josh: please would you take charge of this. Bid something low but more than fire-sale at whatever time you deem best. Costs will be reimbursed.

What should be the maximum spent on the bottle, not including shipping? Consider what your alternative sources are for the bottles, and best-price-elsewhere. I'll bid up to that # (less the $3.50 service fee).

Here's where they are at, now... This is unusually high, 6 days before the end of the auction, and there are a number of bigger names that I haven't seen bidding since last spring (the traditional port sell-off)

The 63 Fonseca never goes below 150 (including tax/shipping) retail that I've seen in the states.
The 63 warre i have no idea but can't possibly be more then the fonseca.

beware of lurkers here who may outbid you by $1

Oporto bottled W63 has a high incidence of leakers and/or poor levels - good fills are something of a rarity. UK bottlings are not often seen.

LOL! You have to bid up to your absolute maximum. It'll auto-bid in increments for you. If they bid $1 more, that was $1 more than you were willing to spend. Sucks, but cut the losses. I lost a few bottles last night that way. The tough part was that I needed to be sure I got my big lot (the 85 Fonseca) to fill out enough of the case to make shipping worth it. I delayed the two 1-bottle lots before it by bidding in $1 increments just before each auction closed (thus extending it 5 minutes). Once I had the Fonseca's, i pursued others more vigorously.

I didn't let anything go until it was no longer economically logical; no-one got a great deal if i was bidding.

I was trying to caution against discussing maximum bids here as others will then know what you will bid as your max, and perhaps bid $1 more.

We need these: bid at least $25,000 each. (Ha! That’ll teach ’em.)
