1900 Niepoort, bottled 1971. By the glass from Garrafeira Nacional Santa Justa vinotec machine. A wonderful dark chestnut brown colour. A huge nose, intense and concentrated, immensely expressive. Smelling the glass just creates a response of “wow!” Layer after layer of scent coming out of the glass, unbelievably complex. Intense on the palate, hugely acidic and concentrated. So much acidity that it’s difficult to analyse the flavours, but there is beeswax, furniture polish, dates, grapefruit and muscvado sugar. And then the acidity forces the wine to be swallowed - at which point the complex flavours just explode once again. The aftertaste shows more grapefruit oil, caramel and black treacle but has a poise and balance that is an unexpected delight. This is a Port which can only be summarised with the three letters of OMG. 99/100. Tasted 29-Feb-2024.

It was amazing. It would have:
(a) held it’s own at the “Possibly the best colheita tasting ever” dinner in June 2023 and;
(b) been a better glass of wine than the amazing 1912 Niepoort that I had this evening. And that was spectacular!
