Barros 1960, by the glass from the Garrafeira Nacional Conceição Vinotec machine for €26 for 50ml. Warm golden colour, 20% opaque. Dry and sour on the nose, not attractive. More pleasant on the palate with some honey flavour showing through, but dry in tone so little of the expected honey sweetness. On the mid-palate the wine pulls itself together better, with a balanced palate but fully evolved with the flavours dominated by butterscotch and caramel. The butterscotch is the dominant flavour on the aftertaste but a burst of mint and then a little root ginger and some sour lemon emerges on the long finish. Perhaps this was a compromised bottle when it was put into the Vinotec, or perhaps just a wine cellared in Portugal so far more developed and mature than if it had been UK cellared. Fully mature, starting to dry out and fade away but not offensive. 82/200. Tasted 29-Feb-2024.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.
