To record tasting notes and thoughts on fortified wines we might try which do not come from the demarcated region of the Douro Valley

2012 Quinta da Correira

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

Quinta da Correira 2012, an outstanding year in Carcavelos, giving better balance than 2011. The is the first tasting of the not-yet-released 2012 vintage, which will be bottled in 50cl format. The Correira vineyards are located a little further from the sea than most Carcavelos. The wines are trodden in stone lagares, pressed and taken off the skins very quickly. Held in stainless for 6 months before moving to oak for further maturation until bottled in 2023.

Pop and pour. Amber colour, 10%. Fortified with 92% alcohol (compared with the normal 77%). Balanced nose, bletted quince and honey. Structured, gentler dry (80-90g RS) style with a lovely elegance. Golden fruit on the palate, a little Amalfi lemon oil giving a slight touch of bitterness. Citrus oil aftertaste, lovely flavours and a very impressive length. Wonderful elegance. 94/100. Tasted at a Carcavelos event in Lisbon on 29-Feb-2024.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.
