Reprimand accepted. When the weather is cooler a Leeson Hand Raised Melton Mowbray Pork Pie will be ordered.
Four were bought: £6.99 each, plus £13.95 shipping = £41.91.

Leeson Hand Raised Melton Mowbray Pork Pie: Pastry beautifully crispy on the outside, but soft between the layers. Meat starts mild, almost a hint of sweetness. Then there's a pepperiness that grows and holds its presence. An excellent pork pie. All parts excellent, the pastry being the stand-out feature.

This thread feels like an instruction.

I know what to do next.

I am deeply gratified to have, by my suggestion, given so much pleasure.

This is a pretty compelling argument.

Two days ago I took delivery of 4 x 454g and 1 x 910g Leeson's Pork Pies.

This evening I sampled a morsel or two of one of the snack-sized pies. It is all that Julian described and more. Utterly fabulous and just what a pork pie should be.

The normal-sized pie will be consumed as part of a buffet with my in-laws on Christmas Eve. If emergency covid restrictions result in me and the pie being isolated I am reasonably sure I will cope.

I am even more deeply gratified.

The description of a 1lb pork pie as 'snack sized' would obtain one entry to the honourable order of pork pie trencherpersons on the spot.

You may not be surprised to hear that this pie has just won first prize in the pie competition at the Melton Mowbray Fat Stock Show.

Again.

I shall be ordering more in the new year. An excellent recommendation, thank you.

Also planning an order in the New Year.
Quite keen to try the Stilton & Chilli Jam variant in addition.

Based on this thread I did look in the week prior to Xmas but they had stopped taking online orders; so I too will be ordering in the New Year (and Stilton/Chilli appealed to me also).

Do we need a new thread on "Adulterated Pork Pies"?

Please comment on relative merits of the two sizes. Were the different proportions of pastry and meat such that you can express a preference between two of the very small versus one of the small.

The 910g pie is not stated to be "hand-raised", which I think refers to the method of forming the pastry and the shape of the pie rather than the welfare of the pigs.

I believe the meat in both was the same. The pastry on the tiny little 454g "hand-raised" pie seemed crisper but I confess there was not much to draw between them.

The most important observation I have is that the larger pie was not consumed completely on the evening it was served, which resulted in it being stolen/gifted by/to my in-laws. Having a big pie can be dangerous.

An order was placed which arrived earlier this week - 3 x Hand Raised, 1 x Chicken & Ham, 1 x Stilton etc.

The first of the Hand Raised was despatched fairly quickly and I can now see what all the fuss is about. Very highly recommended.

Just had a first go at the Chicken & Ham which is a very different beast, but still excellent.

This thread brings back so many memories of three summers and two Christmas holidays working at a Pork Pie Factory. Good or bad? Ah there is the rub… but I shall not digress to expose the wizard behind the curtain in Oz.

Stilton & Chilli Jam was a bit odd. Won't be buying that again. A future purchase of others is a definite maybe.

I just missed the cutoff before they stopped doing online orders in Dec, so ordered in Jan on reopening.

The standard hand-raised is fantastic in all respects (meat, spicing, jelly, pastry); the chicken/ham also very good, though I preferred the pork.

For the stilton/chill I felt the same as you; to me it seemed to be very strong pepper, which was strong enough to balance the thin layer of Stilton quite well, but otherwise overwhelmed the pie somewhat; I didn't detect any chilli. Interesting to try, but won't be buying that one again.

But the hand-raised pork pie; fabulous, will buy again; and thank you to the original poster for telling us!

Was intending to try the game version as well. Wasn't available when I ordered.
