Hi,
A friend has told me that the term pipe for the cask is only used in the UK and in the whisky world, but certainly not in Portugal. Is this true, and if so, what is the term that the Portuguese use for their casks/ barrels?

i think the term in portugese is called "pipa"

There's also teh large wood barrels called "Balseiros"

The pipe or pipa is 225 litres. Balseiros and tonnels vary in size depending so as to accommodate a particular parcel of grapes more easily.

225 liters is not that much larger than a standard 55-gallon drum, but the barrels I've seen in the lodges are all significantly larger than 55 gallons.

Whoops! You're quite right.

I've seen anywhere from around 525 liters to 630 liters for port pipes in Portugal. They are old and hand made so there is some variability in size to them. But roughly considered around 550 for ease of explanation.
