1978 Château Léoville-Las Cases

60% dark reddish brown, a little brickish - orangey at any rate. Nose of hot rubber bands (hello Derek), jam jars, wood, very warm; lavenders and very delicate violets. A lovely light balanced entry, followed by delicate acid, wonderful dryness mid-palate, drying the gums; a nice bitterness which rises in the palate and grows, and the lightest barnyard notes (complementing the smell that blows in from the hills around Belfast at this time of year). Not a very pronounced or very long finish, delicate and floral, with that balanced bitterness; chalkiness. "Like licking a brick", said my companion.

Not a big wine but certainly nothing wrong with it. Very good drinking. Thanks to Justin K - going down nicely; the return part of the bargain follows soon.

Those not in the know might now think I smell of hot rubber bands

DRT does not smell of hot rubber bands. He did however alert me to the presence of that smell in some ports and wines and engaged in a long digression on how he knows what hot rubber bands smell like. I realised yesterday that I too know and recognise that smell.
DRT has a nose of eucalyptus, cedar and the blood of the last actuary to speak to him.

I am a fan of the 78 vintage. Starting to decline but still good drinking as you say.
