Short-notice Royal issue
This post to hold arrangements when known and agreed.
Re: Short-notice Royal issue
Some time in the next few weeks an heir to throne is to be born, and perhaps, if one believes the commentary, two. We should celebrate in our traditional way, ideally within 72 hours of the birth.
Obviously, we won’t know the date until it is upon us, and the location is likely to be the obvious. But we might be able to pre-agree a theme. The theme could be the simple ‟bring a bottle”, with a twins-variant of ‟bring two bottles”.

Re: Short-notice Royal issue
An alternative theme would be the port linked to the name of the child. If, say, William, then William Warre suggests a vertical. If Antonia, or Anthony, then Ferreira. Andrew or James points to the founder of the Symington tribe in Portugal. Etc.
With, of course, Royal Oporto as the all-purpose backup.

Kate and Wills were both 1982 children.
Could this be an opportunity for my 1982 "tasting in a box"? I think i have somewhere between 10 and 15. (i will not be offended if the answer is a resounding "no"!)

The idea is excellent, iff there are enough people. May we keep this as the main plan for 8+ people, with a humbler backup if too few can make the date?

Perhaps we could invite the Royal Correspondent to join us?

Possibly this theme will be merged into Anything But Vintage III.

Perhaps merge the event with Anglo-Irish Crisis *Now Wed 24 July* [NOT Mon 22]?

We should have a celebratory tasting as soon as possible. The BBC, in a story entitled Royal baby: Kate gives birth to boy, wrote:The Duchess of Cambridge has given birth to a baby boy, Kensington Palace has announced.

Following a lack of immediate enthusiasm in this thread, I have toasted our new prince ‟may he be wise and charming” with a Caol Ila distilled in January 1992, and a 1995 Partagas Lusitania.
But I remain available for a team celebration and toast with Port.

Re: Short-notice Royal issue
Having not arrived earlier enough that proceedings could be arranged for yesterday, I will not be able to attend any other night this week due to the usual childcare obligations and a wife off to Bristol for the weekend!

Had hoped to be able to join you for this celebration, but work has me too tied up now this week; To extend Julian's toast, "may he be wise, healthy and considerate of others".
Re: Short-notice Royal issue
Interesting. The notice was pre-printed, because if printed after the birth the time would have been known. Also pre-printed was ‟Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well.” Obviously there were pre-printed versions for ‟son” and ‟daughter”: were there third and fourth versions without the ‟doing well”? Sadly I am on manoeuvres this week and cannot join a more general celebration. Instead I welcomed the new baby with a weak cup of tea and a solid night's sleep.

Re: Short-notice Royal issue
I also thought the easel notice was odd - that they knew it was a boy, but had to hand write the time bit..
Anyway - we are long overdue for an offline of some sort - who is free tomorrow (Thurs) ?

Re: Short-notice Royal issue
I don't think the notice is in the slightest bit odd.
It will have been printed somewhere other than the hospital - i.e. within the full control of the Palace. The notice had to be signed by people at the hospital so had to be pre-printed.
Four options (boy/girl/doing well/say nothing) equals four sheets printed on nice paper. A few extra sets doesn't add any hassle an allows for hand writing screw-ups. Adding another 1440 options (one for each minute of "today") for each of the four main options would result in a stack of 5760 sheets (x2, x3 or x4 if contingency copies were deemed necessary) with the only advantage being a pre-printed time.
I think they found an eminently sensible solution by allowing the most variable parameter to be entered manually by the user.

Agreed. But we are assuming only two wellness possibilities. I wondered how many such possibilities were pre-printed.DRT wrote:I think they found an eminently sensible solution by allowing the most variable parameter to be entered manually by the user.

Surely it would have been simpler to have taken a blank sheet of paper and a typewriter to the hospital..

I suspect that, had the wellness result been anything but the one presented, that there would have been sufficient time for preparing/printing replacement announcements long before any such announcement would have been made.jdaw1 wrote:Agreed. "All is well" is announced immediately.
"All is not well" is generally delayed significantly.
