A Sad Loss

Post by DRT »

It is with deep regret that I have to report the loss of a dear old friend of mine who has served me well for many years.

At approximately 08:30 on Friday 22 July, after 5 days away from home, I left my hotel room in London and checked out of the hotel. I had a busy week at work and didn't give a thought to my friend until this evening when I went to my wine fridge and pulled out one of his favourite ports, a Warre's LBV 1995.

Two minutes later I realised that he was gone forever. I am devastated. No one will ever take his place.

I don't think there has been this amount of Collateral Damage since Shock 'n' Awe

Come on, sing with me in memory of the dearly departed...

Do-do-do, do-do-do
do-do-do, do-do, do

do-do-do, do-do-do
do-do-do, doooo...

Tradgedy!
When your Screwpull's gone
and you can't go on it's
Tradgedy!

When your Ports been had,
and you feel so bad.
Its tragedy!

Its hard to bear
With nowt to go home with,
your going nowhere,
tragedy...

When you lose control
And you got no soul , it's
Tragedy...
When the morning cries
And you don't know why , it's
Hard to bear
With no-port beside you
Your goin' nowhere

Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

A daft question I know, but have you considered ringing the hotel?

Did I miss something , or are we mourning the loss of an inanimate object . . . I could understand mourning the loss of a loved one , or one who wasn't loved , or a pet , even an insect , but then again , this is afterall , meaningless drivel :) :)

Oi !!!!

Don't go rubbing PB in my wound

I tried calling the hotel but had no luck. My dear loved one has gone forever

...and what's wrong with loving inanimate objects? I have a 13 year old son who spends his entire life lying on the floor surrounded by empty crisp packets and smelly socks, but I still love him :D

A slightly late update. Approximately eight years later I found my long lost friend in a box in my loft wrapped in kitchen roll and surrounded by port glasses wrapped in a similar manner. I forgave my (now) wife immediately and put it down to experience.

Finally, after eight years, you can stop singing falsetto. Until your (now) wife finds out, then you might have another short while.

Much joy. A sign from the Port Gods to put it to good use as soon as possible.
