Fonseca Port 2000 ~ 12 @ $70 RP95+, ST95 "Saturated medium-deep ruby. Exotic aromas of black fruit liqueur, road tar, smoked meat and hot stones; this reminded me of a great ripe-year Hermitage. Hugely rich and dense, with compelling sweetness and pliancy but also sound framing acidity. Extremely youthful and very long on the aftertaste. Finishes with suave but strong tannins and excellent grip and thrust. Like the best examples of the vintage, this won't injure your palate if you broach a bottle today, but it's structured for extended aging." Stephen Tanzer

Quinta do Infantado Port 1992 ~ 4 @ $67 RP95 "There were only 1,000 cases produced of the 1992 Vintage Port, and they are not likely to languish on retailers' shelves. A saturated, black/purple color is followed by a huge, ripe, pure nose of jammy blackberry and cassis fruit that is vaguely reminiscent of such great 1990 Hermitages as Chapoutier's Le Pavillon, Jaboulet's La Chapelle, or Chave's red label Cuvee Cathelin. Awesome concentration, massive body, an unctuous texture oozing with fruit, glycerin, and extract, and a blockbuster finish all suggest this will be a monumental port. Drink it between 2000-2030." Sainsbury (UK) have a sale which ends on Sunday 8th November that gives 25% off all wine including poo and port if you buy any 6 bottles.

For those looking for a cheap bottle of port you can have Dow Trademark Reserve (posh ruby) which already has 50% discount at £5.50(ish) and then an extra 25% off if you buy 6 - about £25 for 6 bottles.

They also have Quinta da Eira Velha 2000 at £15 per bottle (as part of an any 6 bottle purchase). I have no idea what this tastes like.

I don't know what the Eira Velha is like, but I tasted the regular Martinez in Jan. 2006 and, judging from my TN, didn't really like it:

Smells like sour sweets and cooked vegetables. Odd. Also some spices (sage, cloves). This is incredibly thin on the palate, and extremely acidic, combined with artificial sweetness. Not recommended. 78/79

Now, it could have been in an odd phase of course, or it could just have been a bad bottle. Anyway, at £15 I would just buy 3, try one, and if you don't like it, keep the other two for a couple more years to see if they get any better. What could go wrong?

What could go wrong?

Hmm!if it does taste like that then it might just achieve that rare status of a Port that can’t even be used for cooking! Not sure I’d like my sauces flavoured with sour sweets and artificial sweetness!
