What’s the theme for what we’re meant to open? Port?

Several of us seem to be going for 1980s port.

Oops! - looks like I'm too late..

No worries - should I try to organise a 'super monkey' event - where everyone pulls a bottle from their cellar and everyone else tries to guess, given what they know about that person's preferences?

There are a couple of people who have let me know that their samples have not yet arrived. I humbly apologise, these all went in the post on Tuesday last week (apart from Freddy's, which was posted Friday) with the expectation they would all arrive 2-3 days later in the UK and 3-5 days later outside the UK.

Hopefully everything still outstanding will arrive tomorrow. I will keep my fingers crossed.

We seem to have achieved a success rate of about 12/18. Better than nothing, but not as good as I hoped.

I believe the theme is "Open a Bottle of Port. Or Something That Isn't Port. Or Not. Or Have a Cup of Tea and Chat."

Churchill 1982 opened and double-decanted. Cork saturated. Lots of heat on the nose. Tasting sample hot and acrid. Hmmm. I'll leave it to see, but it's 50:50 whether I'll end up drinking the remaining 2/3 of the Sainsbury's TTD 2000 instead.

Recently acquired a case of Noval 1985. Think the time has come for the first bottle to be sacrificed on the altar of the vinous gods.
N85 decanted 1630. Quick QA taste. All is well.

The sample did not arrive yesterday and our post isn't normally delivered until about 1:00 pm, so today I'll be drinking some leftover 1970 Croft instead. It's quite nice.

Edit: post arrived early, but alas no Port. So Croft it is!

Have just decanted a Niepoort '87 - the first time I've opened one of these for over 13 years..

..then I noted that it was way too young, now it's looking quite elegant.

Thanks again for the sample from Alex last night and Mike for hosting.

Earlier in the evening I was mentioning using corks for epoxy tables - would be something like this https://www.epodex.com/en/epoxy-resin-table/. I'm hoping to make my table from corks I have drunk so I don't plan to steal any from people... yet...

In the end, most of the samples arrived. Will was in Italy although his Port might be waiting for him in Portugal; Glenn is still waiting for his "natural plant dye" sample to arrive and Rich's sample is baking in a warehouse somewhere.

15 out of 18 was about what I was expecting, although still a little disappointing.

I would absolutely still be willing to take the risk again if there were the opportunity to do this again, it was fun seeing the discussions that were had as everyone tried their sample (and the differences in thoughts on individual flavour profiles across the samples).

Thank you all once again for a lovely evening. These tastings have been a lifeline through a fairly difficult few months.

Purple Cloth Dye
(refrigerated since received)

Color: Dark garnet or black cherry color, around 2.5 pens of rim (which translates to about 5/8" of transparency surrounding an opaque center when the glass is held at a 45 degree angle away from you).

Nose: Jalapeno? There's a pepper that isn't a standard green bell pepper and which makes me think mexican and spicy. Some red fruits behind the pepper. Also some black currant and faint black cherry. Inhale deeply and there's some very faint VA and blueberry.

Palate: Very even and pleasant on entry. Initially a rush of cherry and sweet raspberry, then some mild tannins. Acidity is good. Complexity is low. Medium body with some faint grittiness that gives it a bit of texture.

Finish: Rounder red fruits followed by a high toned sweetness and some faint warmth. As it resolves there's a bitter note, then a flavor like the pepper on the nose.

Score: It is very nice but also fairly simple. 88 points.
