2011 M&S Vintage Port
2011 M&S Vintage Port
Hello, just wondering if anyone has purchased and tasted the Marks and Spencer own brand 2011 Vintage Port? According to the bottle it is produced by David Guimaraens at Taylors in conjunction with M&S. Obviously the 2011 vintage ports are very well rated and at a mere £27 per bottle seems like a real bargain! especially when compared to a 2011 Taylors vintage at around £80.
Anyone tried it yet? appreciate its still a bit young!
I made a query with Taylors and got the following reply:

Dear Sir,
Thank you for your enquiry.
The M&S 2011 Vintage Port was blended by our group’s Head Winemaker, David Guimaraens together with M&S Wine Technologist. The grapes are all grade A grapes from our own Quintas (not just Taylor’s) and foot trodden in the traditional manner (you can actually find this information on the bottle’s back label).
M&S organise press tastings to show their wines and they do also submit some of their wines to the main wine competitions in the UK. As far as their ports are concerned, they have been consecutively awarded in those competitions. Since the 2011 Vintage was launched at the end of 2014 until today, it has been receiving excellent awards (1 Gold and 3 Silver).
For more information, namely any reviews or press comments, we suggest that you contact M&S directly, as this is all dealt with by their own team.
Please also find below a tasting note of this 2011 Vintage:
Intricate nose with aromas of blackberries and loganberries, subtle hints of amber and spring blossom and delicate spice.
A tight, well-formed palate with an abundance of dark berry fruit, rich chocolate and liquorice, culminating in a long finish. Firm, closely woven tannins that give the wine great structure and body. An elegant finely constituted Vintage Port which will drink beautifully now or age quietly in the cellar beyond 20 years if properly stored.
Thank you very much for your contact.
Best regards,
Patricia

While I've not had this one that I recall, these BOB's (Buyers Own Brand) now days are typically a lesser quality blend than their producer's top VP's. So don't expect a Fonseca or Taylor's 2011 VP level quality. That said, they do typically offer very good bang for the buck.

I think this is 'Skeffington', which from my own limited experience is very good value for money. I have not had this particular port but have been tempted, especially when M&S do their buy 6 get 25% off offer. My own experience of Skeffington is that it is a decided cut above most BOB supermarket ports.

I have a very similar view on Skeffington's ports. For a fair number of vintages Skeffington supplied both Davy's and Tanners with their own label port. The Davy 1994 is remarkably good - both in taste and in value for money.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.
2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

I think this is a blend that is unique to M&S, which is something they have done before.Andy_1590 wrote: ↑18:32 Tue 22 Aug 2017I made a query with Taylors and got the following reply:
