2011 Quinta do Cidro Rufete

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

This is a single varietal made by Real Companhia Velha. I had the good fortune to try it in Portugal last year and was astonished at how nice it was. I managed to bring a bottle back to the UK and opened it this evening. It is surprisingly light-bodied wine but packs a hidden punch. Delicate, sweet fruit on the nose and initially light on the palate, this grows in power and impact until you realise how you had been fooled. The fruit is ripe and sweet, and backed by ripe but firm tannins and a high level of acidity. These all combine to give a wine with finesse and elegance yet with the power to easily cope with fatty food — like the roast lamb I had for dinner. The aftertaste is sweet and the finish very, very long. Long enough that I can type this tasting note and still have a vibrant and substantial flavour echoing round my palate. And the best bit is that it costs around £9-10. 90/100. Drunk 4 Jun 2017.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

RCV has really been making some really good dry wines lately. And many of them are priced very inexpensively to boot.
