sending a message to a group

Post by Glenn E. »

jdaw1 does it regularly, but I cannot figure out they secret access needed to send a PM to a group. (Specifically, in this case, New York Tasters.)

I also no longer have access to reply all to a PM.

What special magic is needed to gain access to both of these features?

Reply all is available, it is just that for many users the hyperlink is not visible unless you hover over it. It can be found under the reply button.

One way to pm the group is to get to the compose pm page, hit find member, in the search criteria, pick the group you want then hit search. When the list comes back, mark all, then hit select. This will add all the users in the group.

Only issue being that you are likely to be currently limited to be able to pm 5 members at a time.

Do consider adding yourself to to the group New York tasters.

Also note that it is not (or has not always been) available in all "board styles" (UserControlPanel->BoardPreferences->MyBoardStyle) - I had to switch to "PortForumRed2012" from "PortForumRed" for it to be present (as a tiny arrow under the reply button).

It is hoped that this problem will be fixed by the upgrade to our phpBB (forthcoming).

It is not. There is nothing under the reply button to hover over.

Hmm... I'll have to try that and see if it makes Reply All suddenly available.

Yes, understood. However this group contains more than 5 members. Further, there is clearly a way to send a PM directly to a group without needing to individually include every member of the group because jdaw1 does it regularly.

I still have no idea what you're talking about. I'm asking about a (missing) board feature, not organizing a tasting. As Julian said, if you want to be included in PMs about events in the New York area you should add yourself to the group New York Tasters. It isn't reasonable to expect people to remember who they're supposed to add to group PMs when a group exists for exactly that purpose.

This works, mostly. Unfortunately I don't like PortForumRed2012 as much as PortForumRed. :(

But the real problem is apparently that I'm not authorized to send private messages to groups. So when I attempt to Reply All, all that happens is that I get a message to that effect and I'm not allowed to send the message that I'm trying to send.

Is this a closely guarded feature, or is it perhaps one that could be enabled for the non-Admins among us? (I assume it is currently Admin-only.)

Ah---I was mistaken, my bad. Did not know I could add myself to a group....I thought you were organizing a tasting. Now I'm added to the group. Thank you.
