Education, Education, Education

Post by DRT »

Admin2 Note:

I have moved this thread from Meaningless Drivel to Site Stuff for the following reasons:
  • The subject matter is not meaningless
  • Most of the posts are not drivel
  • The subjects discussed are mostly site related

Here...
jdaw1 wrote:Post number (the number of the first post; not the thread number
Firstly, until I read this I did not know that it was possible to isolate the reference number of individual posts. I am now interested to know:
  • How do I do that?
  • what practical uses can I put it to in future posts?
  • anything else that Jdaw1 could tell us about this subject that would be useful
Derek

PS: Hopefully this thread can be re-used for all future educational topics that have nothing to do with port.

I thought your Post number continually moved up. So it might appear as one number, but then moves up as you post on other threads.
Are you on about something different?

If you pass your mouse over the quote button, you'll get the number for your post in the status bar of your browser.

So... if you want to take the link you'll have to know the number of your tread that is in the URL of your address bar and the number from the quote button.

URL should look like this : viewtopic.php?t=758&p=5303

t is for the tread and p for the post. The combinaison should bring you to the right place. It is the same technique used when you receive email about replies on the forum.

Fred,

When I pass my mouse over the quote box, it just says 'Reply with Quote'.
Maybe I'm doing it wrong. And to be fair, its not very important to me, I was just curious.

Fred, thanks!

Alan, you are looking in the wrong place. Position your cursor over the button and then look in the bottom left corner of the window. There should be a URL displayed there which is the link to the item you are pointing at. It changes as you move the cursor around the screen.

Not a frosty carrot in my bottom left corner. But never mind. Moving on...

No. You will be educated whether you like it or not.

Click on the "View" menu option at the top of your browser then click on "Status Bar". You should now have a status bar displayed along the bottom of the Internet explorer window.

Report back with results please.

Gotcha!

Didn't have a view icon, but did have Tools, then tool bars, then status bar.

I'm entering the technical age again. Nose bleeds and everything. :D

When trying to create a link to a specific post rather than a thread what syntax is used to ensure the target post is displayed rather than the top of the thread?

Derek
The url should look like this

viewtopic.php?p=6524#6524

where the numbers at the end represent the post id. If you hover over the quote button you can see the post id in the bottom left corner of the window.

Putting this in context gives this
Port is basically a red drink

Is it possible to send a PM to more than one person simultaneously?

If so, what syntax should be used to achieve this?

This requires an update to phpBB, which I've downloaded and now need to get Treacle to implement. In return I have a lot of SQL to write for one of her sites.

t=758, p=6702

Post by jdaw1 »

Just noticed this thread.

One could load it with either of:
viewtopic.php?p=6702
viewtopic.php?t=758
but that starts at the top of the page. Suffixing either of these with “#6702† should cause the browser to automagically start the scroll position at this post.

I call the first of these the post number, the second the thread number.

automagically
There's no magic involved - honest. I think you may have made a typo with the 'g' directly below the 't' - gry go pay aggengion.

you missed the split infinitive

Luckily your failure to accept the modern coining of words meant you missed the split infinitive.

Modern?

This was used in the Nineties and ridiculed so much that even Americans thought that it was a good idea to stop using it. You're so last Millennium.

This has a bad feeling about it, a bit like a secret society that unfairly excludes the masses. I will decline until available to all. Thanks

Or, alternatively, offer to use your new found powers for the good of all and offer those plebs without these giddy powers that you will forward on their behalf Private Messages which they wish to distribute to more than one recipient.

That would simply allow some of the masses to become more equal than others. Not good, unless you're a pig.
