Thank you g-man for suggesting and DRT for doing so promptly. Let’s see whether it works.

BTW, when spam is noticed:

One spammer, though not the kitchen variety, just registered, and was still viewing the site as I deleted. Zap!

Although Google will do their very best not to tell us exactly how it works, the latest algorithm (aka Penguin 2.0) is believed to take a dim view of websites that seed lots of spam links to themselves from content locations that bear little relation. So, for example, a website promoting the virtues of port drinking will not be considered by Google to be relevant to buying cheap kitchens. If that proves to be the case, we might see a reduction in such behaviour.

I do of course accept many of us decant in the kitchen, but I think that degree of connection will probably be discounted by the penguins!

I think that the goblins promoting a certain class of domestic improvements are doing one link per town. Perhaps, when every large town in the UK has been promoted, they’ll be done.

But how large is ‟large”? To take an example from DRT’s county, is Ault Hucknall large?

Bolsover is the district town, I notice. Bolsover has an interesting number of pubs in its main square, from memory. I am sure we will have a post from Bolsover soon.

Perhaps the temporary ban on the offending word will dissuade them.

They won’t know if until after posting. And I very much doubt, if they realise, that they’ll delete the post and the account.

It didn't work :(

Interestingly, the spam post that I just deleted was able to bypass the (now deleted) word censoring setting, suggesting it is automated spam rather than a human.

I will try something else.

The most recent deletion was ‟In Burgesshill”. Oh dear: Burgess Hill is small, pop. 28k.

How many real new subscribers does TPF get every day?

Perhaps new subscribers should be restricted from posting until they have contacted an Admin?

Less than one a week. Maybe one a month.
Glenn E. wrote:Perhaps new subscribers should be restricted from posting until they have contacted an Admin?
That used to happen. I would get dozens of emails every day needing processing. Sometimes real people wouldn’t be approved for weeks, by which time they’d lost interest.

Separately, I know that new boy Zj0IZredf7 looks dodgy. But a different dodgy to the recent crew, so I’m waiting to see what (s)he does. Then, Zap!

A small tweak to the "something else" seems to be working on the cooking place fitters.

Welcome to :tpf: :D

Do you mind if we move your post to a more appropriate place?

Just waded through two years of people with only one post. One had subsequently changed his signature, been flagged by Daniel, and then not noticed. One had edited his post to add links sneaky! Both people deleted, and posts retained by edited.

That's fine, Derek, just wanted to chime in that I likely would have been one of those people to forget about signing up with a big wait. Thanks!
