Auto log-out while posting?

Post by RAYC »

Does anyone else have problems with being automatically logged-out of the site during the course of typing a post?

I often find that unless I rattle off my post in double-quick time, I press submit and am confronted by an error message telling me I need to log in to post. Clicking the back button does not recover the text and my thoughts are lost forever.

The fix, at the moment, is simply to copy all text in the message box before clicking "submit" and then to log back in and paste if an error message is thrown up. But i can't help feeling this must be unnecessary and that jdaw1 will groan at some elementary mistake i have made as soon as he reads this!

What browser are you using? Any special configurations?

Internet Explorer 6. No special configurations that I know about, but unfortunately my hands are tied on that front (office computer/systems).

Will test to see whether this also happens on mac at home.

I used to experience the same problem when using IE6 on my office laptop at home. It seemed to be related to the broadband signal dropping out as I was posting. I have been using a Mac for 3 weeks and it hasn't happened on that (yet).

So i have returned to my office in London where a shiny new Windows 7 computer was waiting.

Not sure what version of IE it has, but the auto log-out problem is now even worse than before.

Even 10 seconds on a short 1-line post seems to be too long, necessitating the [select all, copy, re-log-in, paste, poste] palarva every time i want to post (or send a pm).

Is there any work-around? Or is this just a function of the office servers?

[the log-out only seems to occur when i click to submit a post - i can navigate the site and browse whilst logged in (and remain logged in) without problem]

Is there a script setting that is mis-behaving? Perhaps scripts prohibited, or the like?

It is now 9+ months later and I still haven't had this problem on the Mac.

This used to drive me nuts when I used my Windows laptop and very often caused me to not post my thoughts because I couldn't be bothered re-typing stuff. It would be good to find out what the problem is in case others are as intolerant of such things as I am.

Suggestion: type what you have to say into Notepad or Word, delivering it to TPF by copy-paste.

What browser are you using?

Or, just before you hit the button to post, "Select All" (Ctr-A) and "Copy" (Ctr-C). Your work is then ready to paste if the submission fails. This has the same result as Julian's solution but avoids using a second application.

Unfortunately, this is likely the problem. Since you've already said your hands are tied in this regard, there's probably nothing that can be done.

CTRL-A, CTRL-C, <submit>, re-post via CTRL-V if necessary is probably the most efficient solution until you can upgrade your browser.

Our "Man at Microsoft" managed to side-step the optimum solution quite brilliantly ;-) :P

I use various PCs to access the site. All use Windows as the operating system (apart from this iPhone) and run IE7, 8 or 9 depending whic machine it is. I just don't have the same problem.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

Unfortunately there's also the re-logging in! And the odd occasion where it slips my mind to copy before hitting submit...(usually because i have spent the weekend or previous evening on my mac at home and so do not bother with the routine)

Ah well...at least the site isn't blocked at work...then what would i do?!!!

Have tried adding TPF to my list of "Trusted Sites". Will see if it makes a difference.

Can the machine distinguish based on who wrote the tasting note? Not all Ports taste of melons.

Seems to have made it better - at least right now at this ungodly hour. Will have to see how it goes during the day.

I'm at Turn 10. We may be owned by Microsoft, but we are not Microsoft. We refuse to be assimilated. A MS badge will not get you onto my floor without escort. I still grouse about MS products at work to my co-workers, who typically agree with me.

And we just installed a Mac in my cube today. Granted, it appears to be a G4 tower, but it's a Mac. For them artsy-fartsy guys whose projects I manage.

(Looks like a typical business cube-farm quad, but holds seven very cramped desks. A sept?)

Hooray - adding TPF to "trusted sites" seems to have worked, whatever the reason.

Someone who knows something about computers will now tell me that that's impossible, but there we go!
