Avatar Size

Post by DRT »

The new version of software we are now using does not seem to cope well with large Avatars as it places the avatar below the post and creates lots of wasted space.

I would suggest that we impose a reduced maximum size for all Avatars to avoid this problem. I would suggest a size that is no larger that 100x150 pixels, which is the same width and 1.5 times the height as Tom's current avatar.

It is possible for the Admins to reduce the size of current avatars so no-one else will have to do anything other than making sure that any new avatar you attempt to load in the future is within the size limit.

Does anyone have any objections to this proposal?

My vote is for a still-lower height. The excess width falls out of the side of the window, so looks ugly — but that is the loss of the person with such a wide avatar. The excess height, however, produces wasted vertical space, resulting in only two or three two-lines posts per page. So I favour being more brutal about the height:

is 51 high, so a reasonable bound could be between that and double that.

Yes, I’ll settle for Derek’s more merciful proposal of ┰¤150.

I recently redid my avatar (and got no comments on it, very disappointed) and was careful about sizing. In particular, I set the width to 160 (about 10-20 pixels smaller than the maximum size of text in the right column @1024), and the height at 116. I have no idea how I arrived at height 116, but it seemed to be a good compromise between too much extra vertical space and not enough avatar. It might be worthwhile to revisit the right-column in general. "Joined" isn't that relevant on every post, once we get to know each other, and the PM/Email option could go to the right of the user name.

I'm fine with the admin resizing mine. It was annoyingly big anyway.

Agreed on both. Please post in New Style thread.

I have changed the maximum Avatar setting to 150 x 150 pixels. Non-compliant current avatars will now be re-sized, which may take some time.

I would suggest letting active people with suspiciously large avatars know about this change, many of us will fix our av's voluntarily.

There was only one member with a significantly large Avatar and I communicated with and gained his approval before making the change. I also posted this thread two weeks ago giving notice that the change was coming. Have I been too rash?

The new size looks much better than the big avatars. Thanks for the change Derek.

I do like the smaller size of the Avatars. Good change.

I don't see why. This size looks perfectly ok.

I've just noticed that I've been promoted from Noval '77 up to Fonseca 1980 (a favourite of mine). My avatar has been changed to celebrate this new found status.
