Kerb appeal; recycling.

I haven't put the recycling out for a few weeks so on putting it out tonight I felt quite pleased with the empties left at the kerbside. To whit; several bottles of vintage champagne, a couple of vintage ports, a couple of LBVs, three halves of 'As you like it' amontillado, two 15yo H&H Verdelho, a couple of old claret bottles, a magnum, burgundy, Rhone and Chianti were all represented.

Touring the village for the evening constitutional I noticed no real competition, except the chap up the road who for sheer consumption outdoes me every time with a box filled with identical rather generic looking Scotch bottles. Still his is not a competition I would wish to win, but I thought I should mention this in the cause of balance.

I have on occasion looked into a recycling bin if I see an interesting bottle.

I find that if you hold the bottles up as high as you can before dropping them in you end up with a bin that is only partially filled with broken glass rather than one that is brimming over with intact goodies for the nosey neighbours to browse through.

The standard of my recycling has definitely improved in recent months. Gone are the days of it being filled mostly with air surrounded by un-crushed Stella cans and now it is just a pile of broken glass that used to be Claret bottles, with the occasional single malt thrown in for good measure.

I am currently in Germany. There are about fifteen different bins to put your rubbish in, coloured glass, plain glass, glass bottles that you get a deposit on, PET, non-recyclable plastic, paper, card, food waste.. Have I missed something? When we empty the food waste into a bin we have to put charcoal on top of it (that's not the municipal regulations, just the place I'm staying, which makes their own compost). I simply cannot be bothered to go hoking¹ around in their bins...

¹Hoking - authentic Norn Irish word for 'rummaging'.

I just happen to have seen the odd vintage port bottle and have speculated what it might be. Hoking, tchah! (As an alternative to forsooth).

Fined: More like totally ostracised. I lift the lid of the compost bin and a swarm of fruit-flies explode upward and outward like a giant puffball disgorging all its spores at once. There must be a better way.

I just had this sense others may be getting of a raddled hick being chased away from bins.
