The Great ‘Forsooth’ Duel

I love the way you're revitalising old threads Owen. I'm very pleased to see that Derek enjoyed The Pogues in 2008. A friend of mine is in this popular beat combo. He wrote the music for Fairytale of New York. Christmas is his 'ker-ching' time of year.

You know the great Jem? Wow, no really, wow. Did I mention how attractive you are looking? The Pogues are one of those bands who I used to go and see plenty in my youth, terrific nights out, but those were the days when I thought there was something cool about being a drunk. It feels very uncomfortable seeing Shane on telly these days, remembering cheering and singing while he delivered a set lying down sucking at a bottle. Was it mainly stage fright? I had a feeling it might be.

Klatsch is from another language and the use of otiose in this context is deliberately provocative.

Yes, once again I agree with all you say, Owen. I once commissioned Jem to build a radio telescope in Lough Neagh and an upside-down shed at the loughshore. The telescope received radio waves from magnetic storms on Jupiter. The shed was meant to look like it had been inverted in a hurricane. The night we erected it we had force 12 winds (hurricane) and had to stand behind it, all pushing, to keep it upright. I like to think we precipitated the hurricane.

Yes, I share similar stories regarding the great Shane. In the late 1980s I marvelled at him. I met him once years later and he was, predictably enough, reasonably tedious.

I thought a klatsch had to involve coffee. I exclude you from the general otiosity hereabouts, of course, old chap.

I have no objection to being labelled as otiose, it was more that prior to your use of it there was only one other, which was by, ahem, one LGTrotter of this parish. My light is well hidden by bushels betimes...

I’m not convinced that the usage was accurate — doubtless explanation will follow.

Well, thank you, but I thought you might have picked up on the correct use of 'enormities' as well.

You spliced that in after I had read and quoted.

And your attempt at self-nomination is noted, with due scorn.
