Something AHB Tasted

Post by Conky »

Admin Note: Here, Derek T. asked people to try to guess what this wine was from his initial TN. This thread was moved here once the answer was revealed.

70's or early 80's? Gould Cambpell or Smith Woodhouse?

I'm sure I'm miles off, but worth a punt!

All miles away

I will leave AHB to add his TN to this thread and then we will reveal the name of the wine.

Wat can I say? When we blind tasted 89 Cruz, I suggested a 'Lesser Port from the 80's' That was when the Glitterati was suggesting allsorts! And well, you know my guess on this one...

Looking forward to the answer?

Err, Derek. Conky was pretty close. Anyway, here's my note:

Mid-red colour, slightly darker than the Dow 1983 tasted at the same time; colour showing a little development in the bottle. Nose dominated at first by mint and alcohol, some tones of reductibe aging - some toffee and strawberry ice cream. Lovely thick texture in the mouth; subdued impact, quite dry with cherry stones and ripe vistoria plums. The tannins are still present although masked behind layers of fruit. The aftertaste is enormous, it starts immediately and grows massively with lots of coffee, cherry balck chocolate and complexity. This is a huge wine that is not yet ready for drinking and needs at least another 5 years in the bottle. Very good today but will be much, much better in 10 years. 7/8 or 92/100.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

I'll guess 77 Smith Woodhouse.

Anyone want to revise their guess following AHB's note?

Simon's guess fits the description pretty well, as does F85..

..but has Derek broken into his stash of Nacionals?? - an NN64 or 67 might fit the bill..

I guessed a '91 Vargellas, but was wrong. After that guess, Derek did give me some help in that it was from the '80s and was not a major name nor a major declaration year.

As an aside, while the Nacional '67 is still young enough to appear similar to this description, the two '64s that I have drunk have both been beautifully mature and showing lots of tertiary flavours. From my observations of old Nacional in "lesser" years (1947, 1960, 1964, 1967), these lose colour quite substantially but hold together in flavour extremely well.

Clues:
  • It is a British house, but not one of the top flight
  • It is from the second half of the 80's
  • It is not from a generally declared year
  • There is a TN of it on this Forum

Late 1980s non-standard year British house

Post by jdaw1 »

Roeda 1987?
Malvedos 1987?
Smith Woodhouse Madalena 1988?
Warre Quinta da Cavadinha 1989?

I’m bored now, just tell me. (Is it a valid vote if one uses a curly single quotation mark, rather than non-curly?)

Please tell me how to create curly quotation marks on an MS Windows PC.

Your vote has been counted. It was not a spoiled ballot paper.

I do!

I'm the winner!!! It must be that well known Brain food...Black Pudding!

I presume what Derek is refering to, is that when I spoke to Derek on the day he went to meet Alex, he told me what he was taking. So I knew my guess had been pretty close. Thats why, when Derek went onto say we were all miles out, I started ribbing him that some of us are good at this sort of thing, and I knew I was coming in close to the mark again! Hence the wink. Needless to say, he wasn't having it.

Is that what you meant? :?
