A big thanks to England for ensuring that the game I am going to watch on Friday isn't completely meaningless.

Good day out Derek? Looks like it might have been.

A very good day and a well executed victory by England. Morgan's innings was masterful and I particularly enjoyed watching Maxwell's innings and spectacular catch, which happened right in front of where we were sitting. It was a challenging (Stag) day which started with a Weatherspoon's breakfast and a pint at 09:30 and ended in a hotel bar with a double Talisker at 23:30. I'm getting to old for this.

This was my first visit to Headingley and I suspect that the tribal chant of Y-o-o-o-rkshir' Y-o-o-o-rkshir' Y-o-o-o-rkshir' Y-o-o-o-rkshir' will be difficult to remove from my head, as will the image of a wizened old chap with bandy legs dressed as Snow White.

All still to play for at Old Trafford, which is good.

RIP the great Brian Close, about whom Derek and I were chatting only last night.

Not Hales, but maybe not Mo either. How does tiny Taylor strike anyone as an opener?

He would have the great advantage that he would be impossible to york since he is already so close to the ground. He'd also be able to leave anything over shoulder height knowing that he's barely taller than the stumps.

I did see a great picture from one of the one day games when Finn was walking with his arm round Taylor's shoulders. Quite a comical pair.

In that vein, I have a photo of Stuart Broad standing next to Matt Prior at Belfast City Airport the day after a slightly 'humiliating victory' against Ireland (you know what I mean by that phrase). A comical pair indeed.

Ian Bell to open. Promote him up the order. Who else in the side has made over 40 half centuries when playing for England?

Is it just me, or is it weird to be playing test cricket in the UAE in front of empty stands? About as much atmosphere as a county game in May.

I haven't been able to pluck up any enthusiasm to watch it for exactly that reason.

Has Cook got to 200 yet?

Yes, he was out for 265 (or something like that) after having batted for the longest time any England batsman has managed in a single innings.

Very impressive.

Maybe safer than playing in Pakistan though. I speak as one who thoroughly enjoyed watching England in Lahore a few years back; but then a couple of years later the tour bus got fired on at the roundabout outside the stadium. Chris Broad was extremely lucky to survive. Others were not so fortunate.

That's all fair, but there are plenty of countries where cricket is actually played that could be used as an alternative "home" venue and ensure there was some sort of atmosphere.

What is the point of playing on a pitch where it takes four and a half days to complete one innings? How boring.

There's plenty of atmosphere today. It's not been so quiet in UAE in the past. And this is their base.

Am I the only one who believes that Derek only watches cricket so he has something to grumble about?

Twelve fat blokes singing a dodgy version of Jerusalem is not what I call "plenty of atmosphere".

Isn't that the whole point of why cricket exists? If not, how can anyone explain the existence of Geoffry Boycott?

Interesting. It must just be the singing that you don't like then, because I usually only see you in a room containing twelve fat blokes and you seem to enjoy yourself well enough.

We rarely book rooms that take 50,000 people. I think even our tastings would lack atmosphere in such circumstances.

Is it just me who thinks Daniel only comes to this thread to have a moan at me for grumbling about cricket?

The game has just got a bit more interesting. Pakistan now 6 wickets down and only 84 in front. Are we about to witness Cook's finest tactical victory yet?
