Talk about anything but keep it polite and reasonably clean.

Correct Pronunciations

Post by KillerB »

Having just come from a thread on Champagne, it occurred to me that we do not have a correct pronunciations thread. The offending Champagne was Veuve Clicquot, pronounced Verve-Click-What. Port is just as difficult causing some real hassles:

Guimaraens - Gummy-Reigns
Vargellas - rhymes with garglers
Nacional - Nacky O'Null (Irish Port)
Fonseca - Fonzie Car (Happy Days)
Cockburns - cock burns (obviously and painfully)
Dow - rhymes with tow
Quinta - Quinn Tar
Noval - mis-spelling of Novel, same pronunciation
Warre - Worra, as in worra mess

Please put any others in here as necessary.
Any contradictions will be dealt with in the appropriate manner - with ridicule.
Port is basically a red drink

Some more...

Douro - Dow-roe (meaning "eggs of a Dow fish")
Hutcheson - Ru-bb-ish (ancient Portuguese derivation of pig-swill)
Quarles Harris - Charlie Harris
Messias - Messy ass (historically fed to infants in the upper Douro)
Feuerheerd - Phew-her-her-er-er-her-ear-ed (no-one actually know how it is pronounced)
"The first duty of Port is to be red"

That'd be the Foyer Herd - the acquaintances that you're forced to invite to parties to be polite, but with whom you do not wish to share your good stuff. So you give them this instead.

Coincidentally, WinesTilSoldOut.com has Verve-Click-What-Pond-Sardines on sale right now!

Really though, if they'd used quality paper in 1998 the label wouldn't be yellow already.
