The question was which song, not the artist, because that was obviously you.

Indeed, the question is which song; my clarifications that you can discount the artist and the personage are just bonus information.

I know it is not my turn, but I wanted to tell you that your bonus information was absolutely no use.

I was intending to wait for a couple more guesses, but will provide a clue tomorrow if needed.

No.
Person is neIther a Johnny, nor a Mr. Goode; Artist is neither Chuck Berry, Judas Priest, Hendrix nor the Beatles.

Some of you know each other well enough not to make such potentially uncomplementary mistakes.
No offence ment, Phil.

Not Brad Pitt; not Shania.

Not Major Tom (i.e. Space Oddity); not any other military figure.
Old Bridge wrote: 06:11 Wed 29 Mar 2017 New guess: ME AND STEPHEN HAWKING by MANIC STREET PREACHERS
Not Stephen Hawking; not Manic Street Preachers.

Some good guesses. Time for a clue (or two):
- The song is from a well known album released during the 80s 70s; the group had several well known albums through the 70s and 80s.
- The person mentioned is real, not fictional.

A correction: The album in question was in fact released right at the end of the 70s, not in the 80s. {apologies}

No, and not the Police or Sting for either person or artist. However, since your guess was following my slightly faulty clue (now corrected) I'm counting that guess void; feel free to guess again without waiting for others first, if you wish.

Then surely there should be a photo of Axel with her to promote his book around somewhere? ;)

Is Axel mentioned in the song?
This is too big a topic to cover. Do you know that in 1979, 800 albums (reckoned as the best) were released?
I'll wait for more clues. :(

Does that reference a person? Not the Clash, anyway.
Edit: I see it mentions "Ivan". Person is not an Ivan.

Additional clues:
- The person mentioned is female, and has an OBE
- The album on which the track appears is a double-album

Spot on. I was singing "Vera, Vera... what has become of you?" only to shortly afterwards find her appearing on the news as she had just turned 100. Mike's question.

The double album clue was the clincher! Let's keep the music theme going.

What was the first album I ever purchased?

That depends on your interests as a young man. In 1987 I would have bought Verdis Rigoletto - Wiener Philharmoniker- Giulini.
Seriously though, in London 1987 Bad, Michael Jackson.
