10 Good Things About Selkirk
I thought that in a spirit of togetherness and mutual support we should try to put together a list of (at least) 10 good things about Selkirk. I'll start of with:
Selkirk - hundreds of miles away from the nearest Port Forum offline and so good for the life-coach compliance.

Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.
2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

Selkirk has a golf course, so some healthy leisure activity can be enjoyed.

One can go for a bracing swim in Ettrick Water. But swim fast: it is “the second fastest rising river in Scotland”.
Particularly cruel: it was golf that knackered the knee, causing a sequence of health disasters.flash_uk wrote:Selkirk has a golf course, so some healthy leisure activity can be enjoyed.

There are no wild animals roaming the streets in Selkirk.

You have quite obviously never been to Selkirk!Glenn E. wrote:There are no wild animals roaming the streets in Selkirk.

Indeed. Kick a man when he's down. And it wasn't just "knee", it was "knees".jdaw1 wrote:Particularly cruel: it was golf that knackered the knee, causing a sequence of health disasters.flash_uk wrote:Selkirk has a golf course, so some healthy leisure activity can be enjoyed.
But on the bright side, the golf-tastic knees led to the discovery of an impending health disaster that is now at least delayed.
Every cloud...

"10 good things about Selkirk" seems to be 10 good things short of a satisfactory conclusion.

On 17th June 2015 Selkirk was not hot, sticky and muggy making your shirt stick to your back when you walk 400 yards from the Tube to the Woolgate.

Re: 10 Good Things About Selkirk
Selkirk turned out to be better than expected, but for some unknown reason no one presented me with a dozen or more 40 to 50 years old Vintage Ports from top notch shippers when I arrived.
The haggis starter was fabulous. The steak was acceptable. The Balvenie 12 year old was Balvenie 12 year old.
As Meatloaf once said: two out of three ain't bad.

And the absence of the life coach was even better.DRT wrote:The haggis starter was fabulous. The steak was acceptable. The Balvenie 12 year old was Balvenie 12 year old.

Did you have to wait 15mins while the waiter read some poetry before you could eat it?DRT wrote:The haggis starter was fabulous.

School dinner rules - we were straight in and had finished before the piper put down his chanter.PhilW wrote:Did you have to wait 15mins while the waiter read some poetry before you could eat it?DRT wrote:The haggis starter was fabulous.

Re: 10 Good Things About Selkirk
School dinner haggis probably never had any real haggis in it anyway. How did they do the starter? I've only ever had haggis as part of a starter once, where they did it as deep fried crispy haggis balls (well made, but nothing special tbh).DRT wrote:School dinner rules - we were straight in and had finished before the piper put down his chanter.PhilW wrote:Did you have to wait 15mins while the waiter read some poetry before you could eat it?DRT wrote:The haggis starter was fabulous.

Haggis wrapped in filo pastry with mashed potato and a creamy swede (turnip) sauce that had the colour, consistency and texture of very fine custard.PhilW wrote:How did they do the starter?

Being in Selkirk, rather than in a room full of 16 old delicious ports?DRT wrote:What's not to like.

William Wallace became the Guardian of Scotland there, thus allowing us to see Mel Gibson devolve into a anti-Semite on a global stage today.
