No.
DRT wrote:DJ is allowed Dow to himself?
An attendee called DJ would not. Neither would DJEWESBURY. Nor would djewesbury.
djewesbury wrote:Is LGTrotter allowed Graham's Malvedos Crusted?
no.
djewesbury wrote:A new member has joined. His handle is 1. Can he drink Dow?
no, though attendees only have letters in their names (hence JDAW instead of JDAW1) which I did to keep things simple.
DRT wrote:AP can drink Dow alone?
no.
jdaw1 wrote:I request a specific clue. In which of C and Pascal does the question master prefer to program?
C. However this puzzle is much simpler than that and requires no programming.

In principle, there is no reason why one, two (or more) suitable attendees might not be allowed to drink either Sandeman or Tuke Holdsworth.

No.

No, I'm afraid not.

djewesbury would not be allowed to drink prosecco.

No restriction on what anyone may bring. LGTrotter would not be allowed to drink cider, however.

An extra clue will be provided tonight, if not solved before then.

Can ADV and AHB drink Quevedo?

And after a suitable intervening question... (Reader: please feel free to post my use of 3 dots instead of an ellipsis into the ellipsis crimes thread)

Is JDAW the only person allowed to drink the water?
Top Ports in 2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!

My ill-formed reasoning shot down in flames. But, assuming the question master understood my nudge-and-wink request for a clue, that is if numbers are being assigned to letters, A=0 rather than A=1.

DRT + AHB are allowed to drink the Croft together
DRT + JDAW are allowed to drink the Taylor together
PHILW is allowed to drink the Fonseca by himself
JDAW + AHB are allowed to drink the Warre together
Only one person at the tasting is allowed to drink water

By determining the rules of the tasting, propose another attendee and what he/she would be allowed to drink either on their own or together with others.
As yet, I understand nothing. But I do know that a riddle constructed by Phil will have been carefully constructed.
Carefully, yes. Entirely correctly, no
In fact JDAW+AHB would not be allowed to drink the Warre (that'll teach me to use a pencil and paper instead of writing C code!)
I should perhaps instead have noted that DRT + AHB + JDAW are allowed to drink the Martinez together.
Sadly PHILW will never get to drink the WARRE, either by himself or with others.

Obviously the above correction will now make the answers blindingly obvious and the riddle will be solved in a jiffy. If not, a more significant clue this evening (and yes I'm ignoring your last question JDAW, since the clue will be roughly an answer to that, but to allow reconsideration with my correction first).

A front door, a piece of cheese, a corkscrew, some port, a key, a drawer full of things that don't really belong anywhere, a table, eyes, I could go on but you see what I mean.

Hang on do you mean possession or position?

42 essays of variable merit, a biro (from the stationery cupboard; which is also stationary, thank goodness), a phone, a Wispa (disappearing), a desire to be elsewhere, perhaps in the Bung Hole about 28 hours from now, a tote bag containing a book about Adobe Dreamweaver, a very nice Magee tweed jacket which gets compliments wherever I go and which I complement with a contrasting pocket square.
Which is it?

I have no nice tweed jacket which gets compliments wherever I go. It is assiduously ignored by those who should know better. So we can eliminate nice tweed jackets that get compliments from our enquiries, but not all tweed jackets. I shall do a venn diagram of the pleasingness of tweed jackets.

I resent the implication in the word 'another' that you have given a clue. I assume that you have been to the Jewesbury school of clues, ie clues that have no inherent clueness in them.

ok, TWO more clues:
1. The letter A does not represent the number 0 or 1... In fact no letter represents 0 or 1
2. Despite LGTrotter's resentment, the previous clue did cause someone to mention the item which provides a key to the puzzle (and yes, "possession")

The item is a phone. It's something to do with the allocation of letters to numbers on the phone dial. 0 and 1 traditionally have no letters allocated to them; although I seem to remember Q and Z were allocated to 0 on our old dial phone when I was a bairn.

Am I correct?

Add up the values of the drinkers and the port houses and compare the results to see is there is a pattern that explains why some drink alone and some in pairs. Then work out what is so unusual about Water. Then tell us the answer and ask a question about whisky cask numbers.

Is it ‘transitive’? Meaning that, if A+B can drink shipper, and B+C can drink the same shipper, is it certain that A+C can also drink that shipper?

And if three pairs can, is it certain that A+B+C can?

Cookie can drink Croft.
BMHR+CMAG+THRA+PhilW can drink Tuke Holdsworth.
JDAW+DRT+THRA can drink Gould Campbell.
DRT can drink Dow.
BMHR+DRT+THRA can drink Hutcheson.
DRT can drink Cálem.
JDAW+BMHR+DRT can drink Burmester.
KZZM can drink Fonseca.

(A question with that structure would have been more elegant if ‘transitive’.)
