Hello all-
A big thank you to Moses for referring me to the community. As I don't have a lot of experience with port, I'm looking forward to learning from everyone and taking advantage of the many tastings/meetups around NYC.
I recently took the intro exam for The Court of Master Sommeliers, and will try for the Certified exam in '09. Since I live in a tiny apt- my collection is quite humble- with mostly CA cabs and pinots. I've been looking to add a bottle or 4 of vintage port that I can sit for some time.
Thanks for having me-

Re: new member.
Greetings Matt. As you live in Brooklyn, you’ll be pleased to know that we have regular(ish) tastings in New York, and you’re very welcome to join us. (FYI, how tastings work.)
Re: new member.
Welcome to Matt. In Moses and JDAW you have two very good role models to follow if you wish to familiarise yourself with the pleasures of port drinking

Matt: as you can see, we take ourselves far less seriously than we take the port.
Derek: I’ve had only a Fonseca 1970 in the last week (there was too much champagne, before and after, to write anything coherent in a tasting note). I am slacking. Note to self: must drink more port.

Young Matt, you listen closely. There’s a tasting as far away as this Friday (thread), and your task, with the fate of the galaxy resting on your shoulders [is this the correct style? help!], is to find a bottle matching the description ‟Old and Odd”, post in the thread what is the bottle and that you will be joining us, and then to join us. Do you accept this mission?DRT wrote:But Obe Wan Ke-JDAW you have much to teach young Matt Skywalker:

Young Padawan, listen closely you will. This Friday a tasting there is. Find a bottle, you must. Old and Odd, it should be. To Nick + Stef's, from the Garden across it is, the bottle you must bring. The bottle and others, there must we consume.jdaw1 wrote:Young Matt, you listen closely. Welcome Matt. Maybe Julian will give you one his incredible aged Lusi's to compliment your port?

I defer to the new master.
Re: new member.
Thanks to everyone for the well wishes.
I cannot accept the upcoming mission but I will be joining the NYC crowd in the months to come (can't make this Friday). My training is just starting, please don't make me wear the helmet with the blinder shield.

To think so much time and money has been invested in blind-tasting glasses, bottle bags and decanters, when all we needed was that helmet with the blinder shield...aldukes wrote:Thanks to everyone for the well wishes.
