Cigars and Port.
Cigars and Port.
I love a nice cigar with a glass of Port. I always have. When I started exchanging views on Port with you guys, you actually put me off, with the suggestion it would detract from the tasting experience. I went a few months without, but I've found myself firmly back enjoying the odd treat.
I'm lucky in that I dont feel as though I have a smoking habit, unless you consider a couple of times a mointh, a habit.
The cigars I like are mostly Cuban, and unfortunately I have expensive tastes. Not that I can afford them, but I do like the cigars that are generally considered to be the best.
My favouite is Cohiba. The Cigar that was originally created just for Fidel Castro and was only given to his guests and diplomats. Eventually Castro couldn't ignore he had a Cigar goldmine on his hands and that ugly commercialism kicked in. Thank God!
Now these are expensive cigars(as cigars go). Having Derek come round a few weeks ago and smoke my last one, was a real treat! The fact that he might as well have been smoking a Castella, was a tad frustrating, but there you go.
Derek, if your interested, this was what you smoked. Its here
Other favourites of mine are
and (thats H Upman,RomeoyJulieta and Partagas.)
They do all different sizes within the Brands, but like Port, they all have a style of their own. I'm always on the look out for a kind soul who may be holidaying in or near Cuba, where they can be purchased for about 40% off the price over here. When the good ones are scarce, my fall back cigar is a good old King Edward Imperial or Invincible. I cant drop any lower than those, or my senses are insulted, and I give up.
Cigar Heaven.

I find port too sticky for cigars. Whisky better.

I've just aquired 3 boxes of 5 Cohiba Siglo II's for £20!!!
Asked someone on a Cuban Cruise to get them. Couldn't believe the price. Opened them up, thinking, maybe they are dry and crusty, but they are fine.
Here's the price for one box over here.
RESULT!!! (thats a £130 saving, Yipee!)

Smoking in Portugal
The BBC, in a story entitled Anti-smoking head's awkward cigar, wrote:When Antonio Nunes had a smoke at a New Year party in Portugal, he appears to have been unaware he was defying a new ban his agency has to enforce.
The President of the Portuguese Food Standards Agency was pictured having a cigar at a casino on the outskirts of Lisbon, after the law came into effect.
Mr Nunes said he was unaware that the ban on smoking in bars, cafes and restaurants also applied to casinos.
"We will have to look into what is in the law," he told a newspaper.
The restrictions, which came into Portugal on New Year's Day, are not as tough as elsewhere in Europe but the country's ministry of health has confirmed they do cover casinos.
Although smoking is not allowed in licensed premises smaller than 100-sq-m (1,076-sq-ft), the premises can choose to remain smoking or non-smoking.
A stricter ban applies to public buildings such as offices, shopping centres and schools but smoking rooms can be allowed as long as they are clearly marked and ventilated.

Although no expert, I do have a cigar on a few occassions a year and I must say the best cigar I've ever had was a Monte Cristo A (if i got the name right). At around 9" or so, it also was the largest cigar I've ever seen. Thanks S.C., my hats off to you for that one Ohh, and it was enjoyed in a certain hotel area, with big heavy chairs, in a certain hotel...I will say no more even if you torture me....now bribing me with an old Nacional or similar is another matter altogether
These anti-smoking laws in relation to cigars are quite ridiculous.
I can understand why legislators would want to protect potential employees and the public at large who do not want to have passive smoking.
BUT
What happens if someone genuinely doesn't mind. Isn't coerced or pressurised and would like to entice the smoker to his business. Also, why cant a large premises have a place set aside with all forms of modern extractors, and ventilation, where smoking is allowed. I simply despise the Nanny State with a passion.
The piece de resistance is these do-gooding cranks, create a smoke free environment in all these public buildings, and then go and breathe in all forms of enhanced poisonous toxins that our vehicles and factories spew out on a daily basis, whilst walking home (Or ironically driving home, thereby adding to it all).
This rant is fuelled by the fact that after 44 years on the planet, I am now forbidden to enjoy a fortnightly cigar at my Golf Club, by faceless and spineless career politicians who enjoy interfering with the masses daily routines, but avoid the issues that may save mankind or the planet!

No cares that people eat total crap. In the end, smokers cost the health care system less than non-smokers because they sometimes die earlier and from less costly means. We want to make health care affordable; promote smoking!
An old person in the nursing home is a drain, not the person who picks habits for a potentially early demise...
It's that smoking is annoying and people dislike smoke rather than how unhealthy it is. We do unhealthy things day & out and no one really cares.

Except, of course, the British government who “help you to make healthier choices†.mosesbotbol wrote:No cares that people eat total crap.
